All Kumho/Hankook Tyres Stuff

Of course, most  tyres, were originally made to provide the vehicle with traction that could go anywhere. Certain Kumho tyres were developed to give the 4X4 driver excellent durability. Whilst also giving good wear and traction. Naturally,  in any weather that the vehicle could come up across. Including heavy snow falls.
Hankook tyres, wear technically designed with the help of racing tyres. So,were derived from a “cut-chip and tear-resistant tread compound”. of course, this would give the tyres tread exceptional grip and wear resistance. Consequently, when driving on roads that would normally tear tyres to shreds. Such as gravel roads.

Hankook Formula 4 -‘Talking Tyres’,Australia

Hankook  Formula 4 Australia Motorsport Manager Dean Evans talks us through the Ventus F200 racing slicks used in the Jayco Formula 4 Australian championship.

Another one of the up and coming mid-range tyre companies are Hankook. The South Korean tyre company have spread their operations all across the world, including the tyre suppliers for Hankook Formula 4 tyres in Australia. One of their main strategies was to emulate the bigger successful tyre companies Michelin and

hankook formula 4
Hankook tyres kitted out this Australian F4 car

Goodyear and commit themselves to the motorsport events across the world.

Hankook  Formula 4 and  one of their competitors,Yokohama tyres of Japan are battling it out to see can be the most prolific tyre supplier, Kumho tyres are also close behind.

The Australian F4 race series is run over seven rounds. Hankook Formula 4 has been  chosen by “CAMS” as the races official tyre supplier for the next three seasons. This is due largely to the merit and performance of Hankook Formula F4 racing tyres.

Also taken into consideration, will be  the brand’s ability to catapult a driver towards Formula 1. Hankook Formula F4 are also the very similar, official tyre of the European F3 series, a sport that i love to watch albeit on TV.

To give you some idea of the importance of F3 and F4 racing, this season has seen the promotion of driver Max Verstappen  to Formula 1 scene.

Hankook Formula 4  Ventus racing slick tyres have had excellent revues and have  been  universally acclaimed by the  DTM, Euro F3, British MSA Formula 4 categories and are now to be added to the Australian F4 championship, a great achievement from the South Korean tyre company.

All this helps tyre companies such as Hankook to establish themselves in the race to become a top flight tyre manufacturing company. Yokohama tyres are also hot on the heals of Hankook as both companies, and should i also mention kumho tyres, are making headway’s onto the lucrative motorsport scene and increase their market share as mid-range tyres.

Hankook Tyres non-pneumatic tyres in successful tests

The Hankook Tyres non-pneumatic tyres

Hankook Tire has reported the successful high speed testing of its iFlex non-pneumatic tyre. The South Korean company has been developing the iFlex concept since 2011, and recently fitted its lates…

The The Hankook Tyres non-pneumatic tyres contradicts one of my previous articles?

I said that these airless tyres would not be used on passenger cars but now Hankook Tyres non-pneumatic tyres have somewhat changed my opinion.

The i Flex tyres were put the  test on a KIA Ray, which was driven through a slalom course at up to 130 km/h (80 mph).

Hankook the South Korean tyre maker states that its airless tyre performed perfectly well in all the safety and durability tests. This completely throws out my misconception that this type of wheel construction with a tread stuck to it would not be flexible enough to be used on the normal road cars.

The Hankook Tyres non-pneumatic tyres known as the “i Flex” is made from polyurethane synthetics(very similar to fork truck tyres) and according to a statement from Hankook, the new units are up to 95 per cent recyclable. A prototype size 155/590-14 (155 mm wide with a diameter of 590 mm) has been used in the testing.

Another similar tyre product now on the market is the Michelin Tweel. This wheel/tyre combination is now in use on garden machinery and plant hire machines. The use of these tyres make it impossible to have a puncture repair.

Punctures have always been a blight on pneumatic tyres, especially on heavy machinery such as JCB diggers where down time is very expansive.

The Hankook Tyres non-pneumatic tyres have now been tested on a car and the test have proved very positive, reaching speeds of 80 MPH. I also believe that the Tweel is now been tested on a BMW car. The results will be very interesting and could change the face of the tyre industry for ever?

BMW Kumho Championship-Donnington 2015 Race 1

I qualified 6th of 12 runners in the BMW Kumho Championship-with a 1:16.7min lap, my fastest time around the circuit. I was running quite well despite knackered old tyres, until lap 4 when I got hit …

A great video to watch as the driver of this BMW, puts his car through its paces. The cars are all fitted with Kumho tyres and these are events that i love to see and visit the races where possible.

This inside camera gives you a great view as the car puts the Kumho tyres through their paces.

As i have stated on many occasions, the information that is gained through the motorsport experience goes back to making a better tyre for the regular passenger cars.

The guy in the video finished sixth out of twelve cars in the BMW Kumho Championship, held at Donnington park in the East Midlands of England in the UK.

The BARC’s , BMW Kumho Championship is open to all BMW production cars that can be bought in the UK.  The tyres that BMW Kumho Championshipare fitted to these cars are in fact known as  Street legal control tyres are supplied by Kumho tyres.

The Kumho tyres are all made from the same compound and there is only one tread pattern available to the BMW racers. The cost of the tyres  costs are kept to a minimum, to help all the competitors keep down the expense of racing.

These BMW cars are really put through their paces along with the tyre of course. At a recent meeting at the Croft race track in North Yorkshire, i was able to ask a few of the drivers what they thought of the Kumho product and i have to say that to my surprise they all agreed that they were excellent to drive on and were an excellent tyre in both wet and dry conditions.

The BMW Kumho Championship races are very exciting to watch and i would recommend a visit if the racing is in your area.

Kumho tech talk videos are well worth a look at.

They show the amount of expertise that goes into making tyres for motorsport. This expertise is then passed onto the production of the regular passenger tyres that Kumho sell in their dealer network all kumho tech talkacross the UK and the rest of the world. An excellent product.

The Kumho tech talk videos are produced in Australia, where kumho Australia give a lot of support  to the motorsport scene.

The South Korean tyre company also support motorsport in many other countries, including here in the UK. In fact one of my customers in Halifax UK enters a car in the BMW touring car series. The guys name is Oliver and i last watched him race at the Croft racing circuit in North Yorkshire.

Although it was the coldest day of my life, i thoroughly enjoyed the racing and was impressed by the strength and endurance of the kumho ecsta tires, that were used in the race.

kumho tech talk
I took this picture from the last race that i visited at Croft in North Yorkshire, showing the Kumho tyre clad BMW, ready for a race.

I also went into the pits area and asked a few of the drivers what they thought of the Kumho tyres and their response was positive. I explained that i was a kumho dealer, in Halifax Yorkshire and they were very forthright and helpful with my questioning.

The touring BMW’s gave a great race in the wet conditions and i really enjoyed the event. Kumho tyres have also supported the rally scene for many years, but are sadly moving their motorsport division out of the UK to germany. A decision that many dealers in the UK are not happy about.

All my followers know about my admiration for the Kumho tyres products. This video just cements my thoughts. Similar events to this are held all over the world. Kumho are one of the top tyre companies in the motorsport world .This helps them with research and development, in their en devour to produce a better tyre for the regular passenger car.

The cars in the video are very similar to the cars that i watched in the saloon car championships, the other year at Croft in North Yorkshire UK. Motorsport events that are sponsored by tyre companies such as Kumho stretch their arms right across the world including

kumho tyres nsw
Kumho tyres take part in many racing events in the world

the KUMHO TYRES NSW events for saloon cars.

The tyres are really put to the test giving great feedback to the technicians, who will turn the data collected into making better passenger tyres for the regular cars on the roads.

As i have stated earlier i try to visit some of these track events to see for myself what the tyres have to go through in the actual racing. I must admit that i am very impressed by the efforts of all the tyre companies that i have had the pleasure to have seen.

Apart from the Kumho tyres NSW video i have witnessed the strains and stresses that these saloon cars put onto the tyres in places like Sneterton and Croft in North Yorkshire. I also try to ask the drivers what they think of the tyres that they are using. To date i have not heard one bad thing said about any of the tyres that were used. In fact on the contrary? most divers gave much praise to the tyres and the tyre companies back up crews during the race events, something that i have witnessed for myself.

Kumho have brought out a new tyre that has been developed to meet the differing demands of gravel & Tarmac rally road surfaces.
Kumho Rally Tyres, have  utilised their knowledge and experience from European Rally to provide different compounds and tread patterns that will perform both off road and on paved surfaces.

One of the big changes in the tyre market over the past ten years has been the growth of the mid range tyre companies. It is not too long ago that drivers were asking ,”where are kumho tyres made”, the answer is of course South Korea. Now with their kumho dealer network spread right across the globe, they are well known to all tyre dealers, including here in the UK.

Kumho Rally Tyres

One of the problems that we have as a tyre retailer. So, is that we just cannot sell every tyre brand. Therefore, we have to try and select which tyres are best. Hence, for the driving public in our particular area. Halifax Yorkshire, UK.

Kumho tyres uk, suppliers account was set up. So I dropped Toyo tyres brand and gave them a go. Of course, the first thing to impress me was their involvement.Especially, in the motorsport field. Kumho knew that the other larger tyre companies had massive involvement in motor racing. Of course, which helped them to build their tyre brands.

Kumho Rally Tyres in Bridgenorth UK

Kumho wasted no time. Becoming involved in many of the smaller motor sport events. Kumho Motorsport, are situated at Bridgnorth a town near (Birmingham) here in the UK. As a result, they are responsible for the company’s motorsport activities in Europe. Including here in the UK.

As well as its commitment to European Formula 3 racing. So ,the specialist division also supports many circuit racing. Including, rally and rally-cross series.  The car in the picture was running on the new C03 tarmac rally tyres.

Kumho Information RFID tags in half-finished tyres – Tire Business

Kumho Information RFID tags

Kumho Information RFID tags-Crain News Service reportLONDON (June 23, 2015) — South Korea’s Kumho Tire Co. Inc.

This is another addition to a recent post of mine. The post is about how the so called mid-range tyre companies are catching up to the big boys.

The RFID tags are fitted to the tyres, so the South Korean tyre manufacturer can obtain information about how well or badly a tyre has performed.

Feedback like this is invaluable to tyre makers. Other tyre companies are trying similar things using silicone chips to store data and information about tyre pressures. This data is sent to the cars computer(ECU) which will enable the suspension and other things to adjust accordingly.

I believe that this technology will be shortly used on F1 cars and has been tested on new Ferrari models.

RFID tags, were once used only for tracking the movement of cattle. They are now  tracking consumer products worldwide, soon to include tyres. Many manufacturers are using the tags to find the location of their product they make from the time that it is manufactured until the time that it is pulled off the shelf and tossed into a consumers shopping cart.

Or in Kumhos case fitted to a car or truck, the Kumho Information RFID tags, will be located between the casing and the tread rubber, giving them access to the location where it was fitted and also the time when it was removed.

The Kumho Information RFID tags, could also be used to store other information, such as wear patterns and the temperature of the tyres could be stored for later use. Once the tyre has been located the South Korean tyre company can track and retrieve the tyre to asses its overall performance and attributes.

Not all the tyres will be tracked, just the new products that will need recovering and then analyzing. Many people do not know that all the Kumho racing tyres that have been competed on, will  be returned back to the factory and examined, for say possibles improvements with tread design or compound changes for future races.

The Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31 275/30 R19 96Y- is a tyre well worth considering, when your next tyre purchase is imminent.?

This tyre has been specially developed to perform to its maximum ability. Also, good handling in dry weather conditions. It has also been designed for high speed usage. Thus, for the larger sedan models and SUV’s, such as the BMW’s and Mercedes.

Because of this the tyre is designed to cope with very high speed stability.hence,  you won’t feel road vibrations. Including less variants on different road surfaces. Hence, such as from tarmac to concrete. Because of the high speed capabilities the tyre s come in “Y” rated speed markings.

Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31 275/30 R19 96Y

Kumho tyre also take part in many motorsport events. Of course, including the Auto GP, Formula 3 series of racing. Of course, using their  ECSTA V70A track tyre. Therefor they have been giving excellent results for the racing teams. Kumho are also experienced in the rally scene. because they are using the ECSTA C03 tyres. That has been developed to meet the demands of rally gravel & Tarmac event surfaces.

The data and performance of these motorsport tyres are combined to improve the results when testing and developing new products for use by the general public, such as the Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31

Some of my customers have given excellent reviews and others not so good but in general the drivers who fitted them had good things to say about them. One guy told me he fitted these tyres onto his VW Passat and “after a 5 month period he thought the tyres where awesome, giving him good grip in most summer conditions”

MotorSport Tyres-Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31 275/30 R19 96Y

Another guy, a Saab owner said” I’m not recognizing some of the comments on here reference these tyres. I’ve had mine on my SAAB 9-3 for about 50,000 miles so I would say that the wear is great. My journey is mostly Motorway so that may account for that. Grip and noise again, are great”.

A Jaguar said that these were the best tyres yet that he had fitted onto his “S” Type, but I suspect that he only drove the car in summer. He said that in his opinion” the Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31 gave as good a performance as the standard Pirelli p zero Rosso and they were more comfortable and quiet. After 5000 miles I have no signs of wear. Grip and handling in dry and wet is epic. A brilliant tyre; with an even, better price.

The price of course is an important issue? Because Kumho tyres are considered as amid range tyre, then the consumer can save money by buying the Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31 tyres instead of the more expensive leading makes. As the guy in his Jaguar did, he was amazed at the quality and finish of these tyres. So to summarise they are well worth a try and in my opinion all the mid-range tyre companies are catching up to the big boys, making interesting times for us tyre retailers.
