Most, brands of  tyres, were originally made to provide the vehicle with traction. Of course, that could go anywhere. They were developed to give the car driver excellent durability. Whilst also giving good wear and traction in any weather that the vehicle could come up across, including heavy snow falls.
Pirelli tyres, wear technically designed with the help of racing tyres and were derived from a “cut-chip and tear-resistant tread compound”. Naturally, this would give the tyres tread exceptional grip and wear resistance when driving on roads that would normally tear tyres to shreds. Consequently, such as gravel roads.

Pirelli is Pirelli F1 Tyres considering a plan to deliver more varied action in Formula 1, with its new deal to be tyre supplier from 2017 now all but done.

Italian tyre giant supplier retain new season after Michelin Challenge.

It looks as though the long battle of claims and counter claims between Pirelli F1 tyres and Michelin tyres may be over?

Bernie Ecclestone announced the decision on television just before the Russian Grand Prix. This will mean that Pirelli F1 tyres will stay the official F1 series tyre supplier from 2017.

The two giants of the tyre world have been in talks with Bernie Ecclestone for several weeks now and he has come up with the tyre company that he believes will do the best job for F1 racing. The deal has now been completed with Pirelli F1 tyres coming up with the best deal going into the future.

Michelin tyres have been busy in recent times, buying two online tyre retailers out, one in Europe and the other in the UK.  They also supply many of the other motorsport race events including Formula E and Le-Man’s 24 hour racing in France.

Pirelli F1 tyres have had mixed fortunes in trying to find the correct compounds that give right balance between too soft, with tyres that wear out too quickly and too hard giving grip problems.

Pirelli F1 Tyres

Of course, Pirelli Tyres say that they want 2017 to be more experimental. Especially with the emphasis on perhaps more pit stops. Due to using softer compounds.

Pirelli has faced a tough time in finding the right balance between tyres that degrade too much, and those that are too conservative like this year.

An Avid F1 racing fan Lee Churms said recently answering a Facebook comment…

“F1 tell the tyre supplier to make and bring the compound that will make sure options last around 10-20 laps, prime 20-30 laps. For each circuit. That’s why they have different compounds. 40 or more laps could only happen if a hard compound tyre was brought to a low tyre wear circuit. Like Monaco.

But F1 does not allow that. It’s too slow. You will also struggle with low tyre temp. Obviously a softer compound is faster and can make up for the extra pit stop you will have to do. It will also have the right tyre temp.

High tyre wear tracks are bad for soft tyres as you’ll have to pit at least every 8-10 laps. Overheating will occur and you won’t be much faster. So extra pitting will be much slower, than if you were on a harder and slower compound”.

Lee sounds to me to be very knowledgeable about F1 tyre matters.

Michelin versus Pirelli-promises tyres will make drivers ‘happy’ if it replaces Pirelli – BBC Sport

Michelin versus Pirelli

Tyre company Michelin promises tyres that will let grand prix drivers race faster if it wins the tender to supply F1 from 2017.

Michelin versus Pirelli-drivers have mixed opinions?

F1 drivers are coming out with mixed feelings for the Pirelli race tyres and a Michelin versus Pirelli is beginning to happen.

In my opinion it appears that the drivers are having to think more into their tyres, than they think necessary.

Some race pundits think this is a good thing because it brings other aspects into the races and makes winning more skillful.

The Michelin versus Pirelli confrontation came along when Michelin began to show interest in F1 racing a couple of years ago. The interest has grown as the deadline for the new F1 tyre tender becomes closer.

Michelin claim that their tyres would take the F1 racing scene back to its origins and could be up to three seconds a lap faster.

One of the recent tyre problems has been ,how many races or laps could be achieved on the same tyres.

The Michelin versus Pirelli arguments and claims will go on right up

Michelin versus Pirelli
Michelin tyres have a vast experience in the motorsport field. Supplying tyres to other prestigious race meetings such as Le-Mans in France.

to the tender time. Pirelli say that they have only produced the tyre that they were asked to produce. Michelin on the other hand are saying that their tyres could offer more calculated lap times per tyre.

In my opinion the race to supply the new F1 race season will hot up, with new claims and counter claims.

It will be interesting which of these tyre giants will win the Michelin versus Pirelli battle ahead to supply F1 with their tyres in the coming years.

Pirelli tyre failure- Blamed on an external cut – SBS

Pirelli tyre failure

“We have conducted a thorough investigation to find out exactly what happened with Nico’s tyre,” said Pirelli motorsport head Paul Hembery. “This investigation now excludes any structural integrity issues.

Pirelli tyre failure caused by a cut?

The picture of the tyre in the image shows the Pirelli tyre failure in question. The tyre had a blowout on the F1 car of Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg and as any tyre blowout the experience was not a very nice one to say the least.

Tyre blowouts on regular cars can lead to horrific circumstances, especially at high speed. This one of the reasons that “run flat tyres” was developed. This type of tyre is able to withstand a blowout, because it has been developed with stronger side walls and is able to stand a sudden loss in tyre pressure.

Pirelli have examined the Pirelli tyre failure in question and have come to the conclusion that the damage and subsequent blowout were caused by an external cut.

Head of Pirelli motorsport, Paul Hembery said… “We have conducted a thorough investigation to find out exactly what happened with Nico’s tyre,” and that…”This investigation now excludes any structural integrity issues. Based on the information and data available an external source of damage is the conclusion made.”

As the owner of a tyre shop for many years, we often come up with such problems on the regular car tyres of our customers and there

Pirelli tyre failure
This caravan tyre was due to a screw causing the tyres casing to separate. But the damage makes it difficult to diagnose.

can be several reasons for this sort of problem. The difficulty comes when the tyre is completely shredded. This is due to a blowout at high speed, the same as Nico Rosberg has suffered. He described the incident as “heart stopping “as he approached part of the race track known as “Blanchimont” at Spa at high speed, full throttle.

When this happens you really need to hold your nerve and control the car the best that you can. This is something that you can’t really practise and hope that it never happens to you.

In my opinion the tyre on the image looks like some sort of construction breakdown, there is a clear wear area, similar to brake lock situation where the tyre tread is scrubbed away in the spot when the brakes locked. This is common on boy racer cars. The tyre then eventually breaks down completely often blowing out in the damaged spot.

Having not seen the tyre on the F1 car, then we have to leave it to the experts, in this case Pirelli tyres.

Consequently, taking 9000 tyres (which is nearly the amount of tyres that i sell in my tyre shop in Halifax in a WHOLE YEAR). So, the tyres will be taken by a massive  21 trucks. Involving 90 Pirelli personnel on the ground as well as many more on the race track.

The tyres that this  Massive Event, will be using .Will be the  P Zero DHC tyre for  dry conditions. Also, the Cinturato WH for wet driving conditions.

Spa is renowned for its difficult driving conditions and changing weather and so these tyres will have to perform at their best.

The race is also complimented with different car designs. Offering the tyre suppliers more potential problems. This race series also includes front and rear wheel cars. As a result, that will offer the Pirelli’s Tyres Massive Event, more potential head aches. So, as the racing progresses.

Most of the road cars that are used to race at the Blancpain GT Series also use Pirelli tyres as original equipment, cars such as the BMW Blancpain GT Series use the Pirelli P Zero tyres as original equipment. This tyre is a very close relation to the ones used for the racing cars.

The lessons that are learned from the race series will in the longer run benefit the experience of driving these luxury cars on the normal roads.

Exclusive Pirelli tyre supply

Could it be that Pirelli, are responding to the Michelin attempt of rejoining F1 racing.

Pirelli tyres, are to supply the GT4 European Series.Hence, this series is split into two parts. As a result, this is now split into the Northern Cup and Southern Cup. Hence, then competing for an overall title.

The race series is organised and promoted by SRO. The SRO are also running the Blancpain GT Series. Therefore the tyre supplier, Pirelli has completed a long-term tyre supply agreement.

As a result, Pirelli first supplied the GT4 European Series Northern Cup early on this year. The giant (now chinese owned) tyre company say that it is very happy to  renew the agreement into the future.

While the Blancpain GT Series. Uses GT3 cars from the world’s leading sports car manufacturers. So the European GT4 series (and, by extension, a number of the cars on the French GT Championship) use slightly less powerful. SRO-homologated GT4-specification cars. Thus in order to open up the competition. Hence, to as many drivers as possible and form a clear ladder of talent.

Pirelli Tests New 18-Inch Wheels – Tyre Blog – Tyre Blog (blog)

Pirelli Tests New 18-Inch Wheels

Pirelli Tests New 18-Inch Wheels. The car was driven by Charles Pick. Pick completed 14 laps in 1m 44.728s. This was nine seconds better than the time set by Jules Bianchi on the same track in Ferrari with regular tyres.

Although that it is well known that Michelin are fond of introducing 18 inch wheels onto the F1 racing scene, then Pirelli were the first tyre company to make and introduce its brand new 18 inch F1 tyres .At the time, 18-inch wheel and tyre units were only used on normal passenger cars.

Pirelli Tests New 18-Inch Wheels combined with Lotus to  fit the 18 inch wheels and tyres on to the Team’s E22 Chassis and the new tyres were tested  on the Silverstone race track.

The Lotus car was driven by Charles Pick, who completed 14 laps in 1 minute 44.728 seconds. This easily beat the previous record and was nine seconds better than the time that was set by Jules Bianchi on the same track on a  Ferrari which was kitted out with with regular F1 tyres.

Watch out for further tyre developments with compounds and different tyre sizes? The fact that Pirelli tests new 18-inch wheels, in my opinion is a step nearer them being used in further trials and on testing, before the new F1 season begins.

Pirelli tyres are the preferred tyre supplier to F1 at the moment, but it is no secret that Michelin tyres are taking interest in a bid not far into the future. Michelin though are well known to want to use 18 inch tyres. They would also like to leave the choice of tyres on any particular race day to the drivers and teams. This opinion is popular with some drivers but not so popular with others.

Some drivers would prefer to stick to the 13 inch tyres that are currently in use. Others are looking forward to trying out the 18 inch tyres. Only time will tell?
