BMW Hand brake problem-Why do my brakes need servicing?

Brakes are without doubt one of the most crucial part of your car and making sure they are working effectively is vital. Watch this video to see if you are …

BMW Hand brake problem-This is a good and simple video explaining about why your car brakes need servicing every once in a while.

As the owner of a garage we see drivers pulling in with many different types of problems. from rattling and banging brakes, to the “my brakes don’t work at all brigade”, like most garages we see them all.

Most problems would have been solved by the driver having the cars brakes serviced once in a while. The problem is that we all lead busy lives and time flies by, well you know what i mean.

Before you know it the brakes dont work very well and you start to panic.

BMW Hand brake problem

This is exactly what happened today(September 22nd 2015) A guy turned up out of the blue and told us the story about how he nearly lost his car. He parked the BMW on a hill, pulled on the handbrake and as he started to exit the car, it started to roll back down the hill.

Lucky for him, the guy was  agile and shot back into he car and put on the foot brake. With a very fast beating heart he drove the car straight to my garage here in Halifax UK.

When we examined the BMW Hand brake problem, we found that it had discs all the way round. The hand brake on this model is connected to the disc by a small brake drum. This drum had

completely rusted up and was completely ineffective, it just did not work?

We explained that this BMW Hand brake problem could have been picked up at a brake service. After a good clean up and some new shoes, the BMW Hand brake problem was solved and the guy went on his way.

Brakes grinding-Dont let them get this Bad or have a brake squeak on dual wheel pickup truck

Brakes grinding

brakes grinding
Broken discs like the one in the video and the ones that we came across on this Skoda are a rare occurrence. Regular servicing would pick up the early signs of brake deterioration.

Brakes grinding

This is the worse example of brakes disintegrating that i have ever seen? Hence they were fitted from new on a Skoda car. Of course, the driver must have been very deaf. Because he brought the car to us, saying, “that his cars brakes felt a bit spongy”?

As a result, when we removed the wheels. Thus, we found that the front discs were completely shattered. Of course, and in separate parts. Very similar to the pickup in the video.

Believe me this is no way to look after your car, in fact it is shear neglect and damned right dangerous.

Brakes grinding, a common thing ?

Firstly, the most common brake noises that come from cars are grinding noises. later, a bad bump, bump noise. Especially, when the brakes are pressed hard.

Brakes grinding

Squeaking noise when braking, is also a common inquiry, but this is just a build up of brake dust and a good brake clean will usually cure the noise.

Some cars still have disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear, although the trend is to have disc brakes all round, Another problem is when the driver asks about brake drum noise. As i say this is normally at the rear of the car and means that the brake shoes will need replacing, or cleaning getting rid of a rust build up on the actual drums, which can cause a grinding noise.

Brake Safety-Awareness Month – Boston.com (blog)

Brake Safety

Stop what you’re doing and think for a moment. When was the last time you had your Brake Safety checked?

it  surprises me when i still see the amount of car owners that come into my service centre (Pellonautocentre) here in Halifax UK, with complaints of squeaks and bad rattling noises coming from their cars, when driving along?

I must also confess, that the majority of the car owners are ladies?

Not all but a 60/40% split is about the average. Anyhow we do get our fair share of Brake Safety problems, because we live in a hilly area and the customers are using their brakes more, (especially when going downhill). I am not complaining because the brake business can be very lucrative and garages can make a good margin.

The problem with brakes is that when they start to wear out then the wear spreads to other parts. For example if your pads are worn down to the metal, then it is likely that you will damage the brake discs. This can then go onto damage your brake calipers and so on.

The best and safest bet is to have your brakes checked and serviced at a regular period. This will “nip any early problems in the bud” and possibly save you money on future repairs.

Unfortunately drivers are very busy people and before they know it the car has gone a year (or two) with having the brakes checked?

This is when the banging and grinding noises come in, when the apply their brakes. They than panic and call us in a state of shock! Because Brake Safety and tyres are so important ,then we try our best to get the car in the same day and fix the problem. This is usually the pads that need replacing.

Good brakes are very important? it is brake check time again

However you would be surprised at the number of drivers. Thus, that call into my garage here in Halifax Yorkshire.Panicking about the DREADFUL noise coming from their car when braking. We know straight away what this is likely to be?

The brake pads?

This problem manifests itself. Of course, when the car has not had a service for a long period of time.

When we check the brakes. Then sure enough the car will have worn out brake pads. Usually damaging the  brake discs. As a result, the damage is caused. Because the lining on the pads has worn away completely. So is down to the bare metal. This in turn wears away the metal discs(rotors) causing then to require replacing.

This is why I say that it is brake check time again? The first warm summer weather is about to reach us here in Britain and millions of us will be driving to the coast or a theme park. For many families it will be their first real run out in their cars.

Brake Check Time

This is why it is very important to have your car serviced, even if it is only once a year. Car servicing also includes checking your cars brakes. Alternatively you could simply have your brakes checked at your local garage or auto-centre. many garages do still offer a free brake check. If you see this in your area then take advantage because it really is brake check time again.

Many of our customers here in Halifax Yorkshire are very sensible and do have a service before setting out on a day trip or indeed their annual holidays. We do often see though cars that are broken down at the side of the road. This could be avoided in many cases by having your car serviced or at least make sure that you have checked the car yourself before departing on your next journey, but do not forget that it is brake check time again?

Van Brakes Require Regular Attention- To Save Your Life Every Time You Are On Road

Van Brakes Require Regular Attention

Your Van Brakes Require Regular Attention and are the ultimate defense against the accidents.

Van Brakes Require Regular Attention;A good informative article about the need to look after your car brakes? although there are many such articles, this is a better one. it shows how important it is to look after your cars brakes and have them serviced at regular intervals.

This also includes VANS? Van Brakes Require Regular Attention

Vans are often filled to their capacity and the brakes are used much more and  faster than the average cars brakes. So if you are a van driver, then make sure that you have your brakes checked at regular intervals. Van brakes can wear down much faster, and are put under much more road stress than say, the regular family car.

I am not accusing van owners of neglect, but they are often pushed to the limit by their delivery schedules. I presume that the large fleets of vans, such as parcel companies, have some sort of night service scheme. Any brake problems can then would be corrected through the night, before it was loaded.

The other scenario is the one man driver owner. Here at Pellon Autocentre,in Halifax UK, we try to give our van driving customers a quick turn round. This saves them some time? The only problem is that Van Brakes Require Regular Attention. When the servicing

Van Brakes Require Regular Attention
modern van Hand brake showing the shoes assembly clearly

times have been stretched  it usually means that the brakes will be in a bad way, when they are finally examined.

Worn brake pads lead to worn  worn out brake discs, if they are left too long without any brake examination. Worn brake discs can then lead to seized up brake calipers, or worn out and leaking brake cylinders. Worn out brake cylinders then lead to contaminated brake shoes and less efficient braking.

Van drivers and car drivers should be fully aware of having un-safe and dangerous brakes, so the message is have them checked at regular intervals.

Brakes Fail-How to Stop a Car with No Brakes: 11 Steps (with Pictures)

Brakes Fail

Brakes Fail

Brakes Fail; How to Stop a Car with No Brakes. Imagine you’re exiting the freeway on that killer ramp with the steep grade and the hairpin turn. You try the brakes and… nothing happens. Careening toward the guardrail at , you brace yourself for a…

Brakes Fail
Actually this is a good article? Drivers think that it will never happen to them, but believe me it is more common than you think.

In my opinion the Brakes Fail problem occurs after a DIY brake job. This usually happens on the older car that includes rear brake drums.

I can always remember, when i was a junior mechanic, learning the trade. One of the areas that i struggled on, was the small springs that held the brake shoes in place.

These little springs never seemed to go back into the same place as when they were removed. This is the kind of problem that the amateur mechanic faces when doing their own repairs. I eventually learned to get it right after much practice, but the DIY mechanic only has one or two attempts.

At the same time don’t think that they realise how important it is to free off all the moving parts that we associate with rear brake drums?

There are small levers that operate the hand brake and enable the brake shoes to operate in tandem. If these levers are not freed off and lubricated it could lead to sized up rear brakes.

This then leads to the over heating of the brakes and loss of brake fluid and then Brakes Fail. The brakes then fail and the procedures in this article have to be brought into play. I have known brake fluid to reach boiling point and evaporate altogether, leaving the car and driver with Brakes Fail.

This actually happened to me,when i was a youth, i over adjusted the rear drums. These overheated and failed? I stopped on a large side walk in Preston UK, without injuring any body?
