A Day At Apollo Tyres Manufacturing Facility In Chennai – Plant Visit Report

An absorbing article about one of the world’s up and coming tyre manufacturers. The Indian tyre giant Apollo Tyres are now expanding across the world via various buyouts.

www.pellontyres.co.uk

When I first read this article. I was reminded of my past visits to tyre factories here in the UK. I now know that the tyre making facilities are very modern and hygienic. As expected, far from the days in the 70’s and 80’s.
The very first tyre plant that I visited was at Fort Dunlop. On the outskirts of Birmingham in the West Midlands UK. Fort Dunlop was a massive tyre making facility. For this reason, was one of the area’s largest employers. You could see the huge factory from the M6 motorway, with its massive “Dunlop” sign on the top of the building; it was a landmark that you would never forget, once you saw it.

You could see the huge factory from the M6 motorway. Thus, with its massive “Dunlop” sign on the top of the building; it was a landmark that you would never forget, once you saw it.
I was a young man at the time.  I can remember seen the motorsport division as we approached the main factory. It was a very exciting time for me. As it was to be the first time.

Apollo Tyres

I knew that this would increase my knowledge.Naturally, about the product and that it would give me a better understanding.Especially, of the tyres that would give me a decent standard of living for the rest of my life.
Strangely enough the thing that stuck in my mind. Was at the end of the production process. With all the tyres hung onto a conveyor belt ready for checking by an inspector. I also remember that mixed brands were coming off the final inspection line. Apart from Dunlop tyres, I saw India tyres being made. I knew that Dunlop made India tyres, but now I had seen it myself, it gave me greater confidence when I returned to my depot in Huddersfield Yorkshire UK.

Apollo tyres would buy out Vredestein tyres from Holland

Later on in my career. When I owned my tyre centre. I had the pleasure to become a dealer for the excellent Vredestein tyres. Because Vredestein is a Dutch company. Naturally, have a reputation second to none for quality and value and build their tyre in a factory that I had the pleasure of visiting on three occasions in Enschede, Holland.
They became a vital supplier to me and helped build the business to what it is today. Vredestein was to be eventually bought out by Apollo tyres, but before that, I enjoyed many trips to their factory in Holland.
The Vredestein factory was to be the cleanest and efficient tyre company that I had ever seen. I was always given the best treatment, and this only cemented our business relationship and my enthusiasm for Vredestein tyres.

Apollo Tyres

However like many smaller companies Vredestein tyres started to grow and sort of left the little guys a bit behind.

They became more aggressive with their marketing tactics and as a small tyre retailer in Halifax, we started to drift apart, and I could not get the right deal from them. The Vredestein sales manager whom I had known for some years, retired and I used this particular time to change my main supplier of mid-range tyres to Toyo Tyres of Japan.
Vredestein make one of the best Winter tyres in Europe and can sell all that they make. They were to become a prime target for Apollo tyres. Vredestein had used proclaimed star car designer, Giorgetto Giugiao, to design their tyres in the late 90’s and the brand of Vredestein had become much sought after in the tyre world.
Thus, Vredestein were now making up to six million winter and summer car tyres and were to become a prime target for the Indian tyre company Apollo tyres, and the acquisition took place in 1999.
The company is now known as Apollo Vredestein tyres and some of the production of things, like cycle tyres and tubes, have to an Apollo tyres factory in East Asia.

Also Vredestein are renowned for their Tractor tyres and some of these will now be made in the Apollo tyres factory in India.
Finally, I am very pleased that I once again have access to the Vredestein products. This is because I am a m ember of tyre buying group Point-S and Apollo tyres are one of our suppliers.

Apollo Tyres North America-Giant Indian Tyre Company looking for expansion in the States.

Apollo Tyres North America

Apollo Tyres North America; Apollo Tyres are following in the footsteps of the now famous and huge tyre companies, such as Goodyear, Dunlop, Michelin and Pirelli. They have now made roots in Europe, with a new factory about to be opened in Hungary and the purchase of Vredestein tyres the large tyre company from Holland. Vredestein is world renowned for their winter tyre range

and also make an excellent SUV tyre.

After a steady year, Apollo has announced that they are now looking at the state of the North American market. The giant Indian company have already set roots in Europe with the Acquisition of Vredestein tyres, the giant Dutch summer and winter tyre manufacturer.

They have their eyes firmly set on the USA market.

The first step was to employ ex- Goodyear and DaimlerChrysler sales executive Steven Smidlein to be senior vice president for North America. His knowledge of the North American market is second to none. They have also employed Emil Herbak, as sales director.

The states will be supplied by the European Hungary factory initially, but I am sure that plans are up for a new facility to be built somewhere in the USA.

In a recent interview involving, Tire Business had with Neeraj Kanwar, Apollo’s vice chairman, and managing director said that,“With North America almost being an unknown territory for us, Steven’s 30-plus years of sales management and retail experience, especially in the automotive sector, will help establish both Apollo and Vredestein brands on this continent,”

“We would be relying on his proven ability to grow market share, with a focus on delivery of aggressive sales targets,”

Apollo tyre has also set up a dealer tyre network here in the UK. They have transferred the British operation side of the business to Holland and are back up and running after different computer failings.

Apollo Tyres Rubber Football Pitch-India’s first football pitch made from recycled rubber

Apollo Tyres Rubber Football Pitch

Apollo Tyres Rubber Football Pitch

The Mumbai Apollo Tyres Rubber Football Pitch was inaugurated by Satish Sharma, president, Asia-Pacific, Middle East & Africa, Apollo Tyres and ex English footballer Bryan Robson.

This will be a truly great innovation?a football pitch made from recycled rubber.

This is not the first time that we here at Pellon Tyres have heard about the Apollo Tyres Rubber Football Pitch. When we first started to deal with Apollo tyres,(after been introduced to them by Point-S), we were asked if there was any junior football clubs who needed an all weather training pitch.

We immediately came up with a local Yorkshire junior football club. Called “Tingley Rangers”. Their football pitches were continuously water logged in the winter months. The pitches were not playable. Neither could the players train, because of the bad and water logged fields.

Apollo Tyres Rubber Football Pitch

However We were told about the  Apollo Tyres Rubber Football Pitch, which was suitable for the training area at Tingley. This would have been great for the players to train on during the winter and the club was very excited at the prospect of training on an all weather pitch.

Time went by. So we kept in touch with Apollo representative. Concerning, when the pitch would be laid. We now know that we were being put off. By the giant tyre company. We were eventually told that the Apollo Tyres Rubber Football Pitch idea had been cancelled due to unknown reasons. The club were very disappointed and so was i.

We thought that the  Rubber Football Pitch idea had been put to rest and i was surprised to see that a whole football pitch as been built in India?

Perhaps Apollo will be able to explain their change of mind?

As long as it is affordable it could be a great success. I believe that the  Rubber Football Pitch, could be available for training pitches for amateur football clubs here in the UK, but when i dont know.

This Indian based tyre company are having expansion plans all over the world. They also make a great tyre product including their excellent winter tyre range.

As Apollo agents here in the Halifax area we will be offering the Apollo tyres winter tyre range to the public this winter.

Apollo tyres plans over the next two years include setting up the Malaysia venture and then increasing their worldwide presence by 15 %

They intend doing this by exports. Part of the Apollo tyres plans, include increasing their capacity to expand their truck and bus tyre range from the tyre manufacturing plant in Chennai. The capacity is expected to rise from the production of 6000 tyres up to 9000 tyres a day.

New investments will double the capacity at the Chennai plant due to an investment of 2700 Rupees crore (crore is an Indian numbering Apollo tyres plans system and is 10 million Rupees). This investment will be spread over the three to four years.

Here in the UK we have witnessed the acquisition of Vredestein tyres. Of course, a very strong performing Dutch tyre manufacture. Which, now is starting to pay dividends. Vredestein tyres have always been strong in the making of winter tyres. The Apollo tyres plans included the joint names of the companies. The name has now become Apollo/Vredestein.

Apollo tyres plans also include the setting up of a tyre retail network.  Which was the previous Vredestein dealer network.  Made up of independent tyre retailers and now the addition of the Point-S tyre organisation.

Apollo Tyres Spending Spree-Indian tyre maker buys Reifencom Tyre Distributer

Apollo Tyres Spending Spree I must admit as an Apollo tyre retailer, this one came out of the blue?

Apollo Tyres Spending Spree has taken Apollo tyres spending spreeanother step

With the recent acquisition of the German tyre retailer “Reifencom”. Hence, this is just a part of the mad rush for the cash strapped tyre manufacturers.Hence, to expand their empires.

The agreed price is said to around 45 million Euros. Although, I have never heard of the German tyre company. So they are said to have grown to one of the largest tyre retailers. Thus, with an online presence. Reifencom have 37 retail outlets and also sell tyre products online. Naturally, in Germany and other parts of Europe. Including France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark.

The Apollo Tyres Spending Spree has not yet hit the UK tyre market, but with tyre retailers the likes of “National”, up for grabs, then who knows?

The nearest we have been was the acquisition of Vredestein tyres in Holland. Vredestein have a very strong presence here in the UK and so I think it is a case of watch this space?

Neeraj Kanwar, is the MD of Apollo tyres and said,” The acquisition is a strategic fit in further growing our European business”, “It will enable Apollo to improve its mix of distribution channels in Germany and Europe and aid in increasing the visibility of Apollo and Vredestein tires in the offline and especially the fast growing online retail space.”

All of this follows in the steps of Michelin tyres who have now acquired online tyre businesses in Germany, France and the UK.

Tyre manufacturer’s boardrooms must be buzzing with conversations about what will be happening next. My money will be on Bridgestone?

Bridgestone are the world’s largest tyre manufacturers are will not want to be left behind. The large Micheldever tyre operation is up for grabs? Now bought by Sumitomo tyres. Who knows.

Winter Tyres tested
Winter Tyres tested

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again and again: If you live in a state that experiences winter, you should invest in a good set of Winter Tyres tested. Yes, even if you’ve been …

This is a great article that shows the length that tyre companies take to test their tyre products before they are released to the public for road use.

This particular article is about the new winter tyres tested, by Hankook tyres. The same also applies to other tyre companies, who rigorously teat their tyre products in real conditions, taking the cars used to their extreme limits.

I am lucky enough to experience such extreme testing conditions. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Austrian Alps to witness winter tyres tested, at first hand.

The company was not Hankook, but one of the worlds top winter tyre producers, Apollo-Vredestein.

The winter tyres tested  were a new winter tyre to sell to the SUV winter market.

I was in a group made up from other independent tyre dealers from across the UK. We were all allocated to an SUV vehicle that were fitted out with the new tyres. The drivers were all test drivers from the world of motorsport. These drivers took the vehicles up the Austrian Alps and the new winter tyres were put through their paces.

We drove on snow and ice, and i must admit to have been a little frightened, by the extremes that these vehicles were driven, in fact i was glad when the thing finished and we got back to the hotel in one piece?

It was a great experience and showed that the  winter tyres tested were put through their extreme paces.

This winter we have decided to stock some Apollo/Vredestein winter tyres, along with the excellent Yokohama winter tyres.

Apollo Tyres and Manchester United

Apollo Tyres and Manchester United to expand Brand Awareness

As the Apollo tyre retailer in Halifax Yorkshire UK, I am always interested in any news that is related to the Indian tyre manufacturers. This article is no exception?

Apollo tyre has seven manufacturing plants in India making them the largest tyre makers in India. They also now make tyres in Holland at the Vredestein Tyre plant. Vredestein were bought by Apollo and he brand is now known as Apollo-Vredestein. They are also setting up a new manufacturing facility up in Hungary.

Apollo tyres and Manchester united are to expand their joint brand awareness venture to as many as a hundred different countries, including the whole of Africa, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Brunei. The Indian tyre company, will be promoting their Apollo Tyres and Manchester United in the whole of India the UK and Thailand and now want to add a further 67 countries to the list. This will include other European countries and some African countries.

Marco Paracciani, Chief Marketing Officer, Apollo Tyres Ltd, said, “The last two years of our association with Manchester United Football Club has helped increase the awareness for the ‘Apollo’ brand across select markets. This expansion will help us in our brand building journey in the African and South East Asia regions and support our growth initiatives in various countries in the regions.”

I must admit that I was invited to a Apollo Tyres and Manchester United day out at the Old Trafford ground, which included a visit to the famous Manchester United museum and a pitch tour. The whole day out culminated with dinner at the Manchester United restaurant and a speech by one of their ex-players (whose name escapes me?)

One thing is for sure that the Apollo Tyres and Manchester United partnership will bring great publicity to both sides of the deal and help push Apollo to the top of the tyre manufacturer’s pecking order.

Apollo Tyres and Hankook

Apollo Tyres and Hankook- Offers Free Courtesy Cars During Tyre Fits: Hankook Tyres is providing Hyundai i10s to its dealers to … http://t.co/UQbv2ppO77

I must admit things are looking up in the tyre industry, regarding the tyre manufacturers looking to help the tyre retailers and tyre shops, to improve their image.

This idea from Apollo tyres and Hankook tyres, is certainly a good example. Most tyre centres also do other types of work including car repairs and car servicing. A courtesy car has become an essential part of today’s customer care. We here in Halifax have four courtesy cars at our customers disposal. This is a modern day necessity, due to more and more drivers having to travel further distances and work longer hours.

I think that the trend for corporate logo advertising in the tyre trade came from Vredestein tyres. When Apollo tyres bought them out, they carried on with the trend putting their company logo onto the courtesy cars of their tyre dealer network.

We here at Pellon Tyres were one of the first to take up the Apollo offer and although we are also Hankook tyre dealers, we have not yet taken up their offer.

These things do not come free of course. We have to achieve certain targets, but when do, then the car is payed for by the tyre companies.

The car looks great driving round the Halifax area and gives us another form of advertising, also giving us the upmarket image that we feel we deserve. in the past this type of thing would have to be budgeted for. But with the backing of  Apollo Tyres and Hankook, we can fit it in with our tyre sales and other promotions, without it breaking the bank.

In the past Yokohama tyres have been very generous with a great deal of help in giving our tyre depot a real professional look.

Apollo Tyres show the way

This video has opened my eyes to the modern way that tyres are now made? I have been a tyre guy all my life and it is something that gets into your blood. Once in tyre always in tyres. Even after a short break as a fire fighter, i returned to my beloved tyre industry and worked there right up to the present day.

All my life the tyre industry has been portrait as a dirty job and indeed it was. I have visited several tyre factories in my many years in the trade and believe me they were dirty smelly places full of

Apollo Tyres show the way
tyres are now made in a spotless automated environment.

chemicals and rubber of course.

The tyre industry also used to brag about the fact that every tyre was man made. Yes one guy would make one tyre. (known as the tyre builder). he would literally stand at his machine and build a tyre from all the relevant materials, eventually coming out with an inside out tyre”

The tyre would then be placed in a mold of the correct size, where it would be subjected to high temperatures and eventually would pop out as a new tyre of the correct size.

I advice you to take a look at this excellent Apollo Tyres show the way video, where Apollo tyres show the way to modern tyre production methods. This opened my eyes and i would truly love to visit a modern tyre making plant ,to witness this with my own eyes.

I always thought that when you had seen one tyre made then you had seen them all, but not after this Apollo Tyres show the way video?

Apollo tyres are one of  the up and coming tyre manufacturers in the world market as they improve their products by buying companies with much tyre manufacturing experience, such as their recent acquisition of Vredestein tyres, famous for their winter tyre range.
