Yokohama Rubber of Japan makes new advances in tyre aerodynamics
Yokohama Rubber has come up with a clever way of making their future tyre more efficient by creating a better air-flow around the tyres when the car is in motion.
Yokohama Rubber who make car tyres from their factory in Japan, have also been successful in recent years by developing a greener tyre that has less rolling resistance and are now developing the idea of an aerodynamic tyre that will help reduce air drag. This will work similar to fitting relevant spoilers to cars.
This development work has been going on since 2010 and first started with the introduction of built on fins to the tyre inner sidewall. This had the effect of reducing drag inside the cars wheel wells. This was followed by the addition of these spoke like fins to both sidewalls of the tyre. This had the effect of reducing drag on the whole car.
The work has been carried out for Yokohama Rubber by a team of engineers lead by Professor Obayashi at the Institute of Fluid Science, Tohoku University.
The study was carried out by using a super-computer which can run simulations of different effects that adding fins to a tyre may have on a cars drag, the less drag the more fuel efficient that the car will have.
Yokohama Rubber has built this new design into a new tyre that will be on display at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of October 2015. Like other Yokohama Rubber tyre designs, I can’t wait to see what the tyre will look like, has a tyre freak I am loving the times that we are in at the moment with all the new developments that are coming out of the top tyre companies, including this tyre from Yokohama Rubber.
