All Winter Tyres Stuff

To my surprise, Winter tyres were still very popular in the field of retailing tyres. Of course this type of tyres were more expensive, but would wear better. So, and their casing quality was second to none. The casing is the tyre that has used all of the tread and then can be used for remoulding. The remoulding option would give the original purchase a second and third life. This is the reason that these tyres are very cost effective in the long run.

Winter Tyres a Brief History

Winter Tyres a Brief History

Some manufacturers of winter tyres  were slow to start

 Winter Tyres a Brief History
This Goodyear winter tyres shows the complex tread pattern

Of course, there is no doubt about that in recent times the winter tyres (as we know them today). Indeed, have taken off big style. Especially, with many motorists here in the UK.

Long ago, I can actually remember another window in time. So, when I was a tyre fitter. Consequently, for one of the national tyre companies. In a small town called Dewsbury, in Yorkshire UK. Subsequently, from what I can remember. So, we must have been going through a spell of cold winters . Because I can clearly remember that we were then fitting many winter tyres.

The tyres were mainly remould tyres

Because of the deep tread patterns ! So, the drivers did not want to run these tyres in the summer months. Strangely enough, tread compound were no different between summer an winter tyres. So, the winter tyres then were really summer tyres. Consequently, with a very heavy tread pattern attached to the tyres carcass.

The tread patterns were usually derived from the old tread patterns as used by the new tyre manufacturers. The old Firestone and Goodyear tread patterns were very popular. Tyre remould companies would buy the old tyre molds from these companies . Using them to remould their tyres onto old casings.

The remoulded winter tyres were very noisy

Because of the big tread patterns they would also over-heat. The over-heating was caused by sheer friction, between the tyre and the road surface and the sound they made was a constant drumming noise, inside the car.

The friction also caused the remould tyres to separate; this is when the tread parts with the casing part of the tyre. This is often seen on our motorways, when a huge chunk of tyre treads strips off and is often left at the side of the road or the grass verge.
The first so-called winter tyre was invented as long ago as 1908 when a Frank Seiberling, cut an extra deep groove in an early tyre to discover that the tyre gave a better grip on a wintry road surface.
Nothing much happened after that until the first modern type of winter tyre was introduced by Nokian tyres of Finland, which was a range of winter truck tyres named as the “kelirengas” translated as “weather tyre”. This was in 1934 and in 1936 the Fins launched a winter tyre for cars which was known as the “Lumi-Hakkapelitta”.

Other winter tyres companies

were slow to follow, and did not really start to develop winter tyres until the early 1950,s. These included Goodyear tyres in America, who brought out the “Suburbanite” whose excellent early TV, advert can be seen on this blog post.
Also at the same time Continental tyres were bringing out a winter tyre known as the M14. These types of tyres were very heavy on tread rubber, but they are the beginning of the modern-day winter tyres that we see today.

The main difference is that the tyre design has had to change to meet the demands of the modern car and more fundamentally the tyres now have added ingredients in their tread compounds that were not known about in the early days, primarily silica based compounds that now help the tyre to carry on flexing in cold temperatures.

Yokohama also make an excellent winter tyres the W drive winter as seen on this video.

Vredestien tyres from Holland were also a pioneer of the winter tyres, first bringing out the Snow + winter tyres in the 1960,s.
Wintertyres-yorkshire.co.uk has been set up as an informative web site about all tyre subjects and other stories of interest to the garage and auto-centre owner.

Many consumers are worried about the wear and tear of their regular summer tyres. As a result many drivers try to avoid replacing tyres in winter conditions. Thinking that winter tyres are going to be very expensive.

Like any other tyre products them winter tyre prices can vary. Similar to any other tyres then you can buy a cheap winter tyre for your vehicle. In my opinion it is always preferable to use them. So. rather than slipping of the road and possibly losing precious lives.

We all know that during winter weather it is indeed a dangerous task to drive about. Major problems for a driver during winter include ice, snow and sleet. Therefore, It is very important for one to use winter tyres in order to avoid any disasters. Winter, tyres are designed and prepared specially. Hence, to perform well in cold and icy conditions, where driving can be more difficult.

Another reason why we should fit winter tyres. Is because winter coincides with the festive Christmas period. As I am writing this blog then we are expecting  a snow fall. This will come at the same time as thousands if not millions of drivers will be heading for the shops.

Snow fall and summer tyres do not mix?

It is a recipes for disaster ? snow falling and summer tyres just do not mix.

There are millions of little grooves that we call “sipes” on winter tyres. Ensuring that the traction is minimized on icy roads. Due to these  grooves. So, it has been proved that the grip is increased nearly 40 times.

When there is black ice on the roads then this is a different type of problem. Winter tyres are less effective but are still better as compared to summer tyres. Which, can slip off the road in extreme conditions. Indeed this week has seen wide spread black ice across the North of England.

Therefore, it can be a really bad experience to drive on such hazards as Black ice and snow without the fitting of  winter tyres on your vehicle. Many drivers do not realize the importance of new winter tyres.

Everyone should use winter tyres during extreme winter road conditions. Especially when out and about during your Christmas shopping. Safety and security are the buzz words when it comes to winter driving with the correct tyres fitted. They provide you with protective safety.

Winter tyres are not noisy

Many of my older customers. Think that winters are are a knobbly tyre that makes a loud noise when driving on normal dry roads? of course this cant be further from the truth? All because of the  advancement of technology. So, in recent years better tyres have evolved. Which help to face even tougher conditions with added  safety features.

“Silica” has been successfully added to the tyre compound. This silica helps to make the tyre more flexible. Especially in the cold days of winter. Summer tyres go hard and rigid when the outside temperature drops bellow 7 degrees. Not winter tyre though? winter tyres stay flexible. Because of the added silica compound.

Modern tyre manufacturing techniques have also enabled winter tyres to be made to include millions of sipes ( tiny slits) into the tyres tread area. As a result, these sipes get rid of all the water, slush and snow. Sipes also help reduce the tyre noise on dry roads.

Winters are ideal and safer on SUV vehicles

This was the old fear. Winter tyres were “very noisy” not any more. I must admit that some of the economy “budget tyres” are more noisy than the quality brands . This was a concern with the drivers of the larger SUV type cars. Because of the large tyre sizes and widths. Then people thought that winter tyre would be noisy?

Not any more? If you stick to quality brands such as Nokian and Michelin then noisy winter tyres are a thing of the past. I have first class experience of this. One our pool cars is a Jaguar F-pace. We recently fitted a set of Nokian winters to practice what we preach.

the tyre are brilliant? no noise on the M62 motorway, even on the concrete sections. Another customer of ours tried out a set of General winter tyres on his BMW SUV with the same results. General tyres are amid-range tyre made by Continental tyres of Germany.

Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 9-Some countries use snow chains and studs

As the winter conditions differ from country to country it is difficult to suggest the correct time to change tyres, but usually people do this in late November or else when snow is in the weather forecast.

Further safety measures can be adopted by attaching snow chains and studs to the tyres. Chains fitted around the tyres help to break down the snow and thus provide necessary grip which helps to control the car in bad weather conditions.

Studs are illegal in the UK. however many of our customers travel o skiing holidays to countries that do allow  studs to be fitted to your winter tyres. Not all winter tyres take studs. However the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 9 tyres do take studs.

Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 9- Fitting winter tyres means that we are all winners

To conclude. If I had my way then everyone would use winter tyres during extreme winter road conditions. Provide their family and other drivers safety. It can be a really bad experience to drive in winters without having fitted winter tyres on your vehicle. Drivers who have had them in past always recommend them to another family member or friend.

here at Pellon tyres we have a large following of customers who look forward to winter and having their winter tyres fitted. These drivers know it makes sense for safety alone.

Why Wheel Alignment Matters-Giant speed bumps in France are likely to cause damage to your car ?

Why Wheel Alignment Matters

Why Wheel Alignment Matters

Why Wheel Alignment Matters

To ensure a car drives safely, efficiently and behaves as the vehicle manufacturer intended. So, it’s important that your vehicles  wheels are correctly aligned.

However, through everyday driving, or factors such as hitting a kerb or a pothole, the wheels can become misaligned, bringing a host of tyre related problems.

This brings me onto a subject about speed bumps?

Has anyone traveled to France recently ? well just like their enthusiasm about roundabouts. France has gone mad with the installation of massive speed bumps Especially when entering and leaving towns and villages.

Apparently many of these are illegal, but it sure means good business for the local garages who offer wheel alignment to the poor motorists who have to face these monstrous speed bumps on a regular basis.

Why Wheel Alignment Matters

British drivers be aware when visiting France ?

So please find this post a warning for drivers visiting France. Consequently, who are not aware of the size of these things. So, drive over them at a very slow speed. Especially when driving you vehicle, in the dark.

Why Wheel Alignment Matters

Certainly speed bumps will harm your suspension. Causing, your wheel alignment to be thrown out. During an alignment check, the car’s suspension geometry settings will be measured against the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.

If the car’s actual settings are outside of the recommendations, it may be necessary to carry out some adjustment work and return the vehicle to its original settings, ensuring maximum safety and driver comfort.

Keeping wheels correctly aligned. Is important for a number of reasons: Safer driving – On cars where the geometry is out of alignment, they can be less stable when having to take emergency or evasive action. A pre-alignment check of tyre condition, pressures and a suspension system inspection is […]

Wheel Alignment care-Huh? What is a Wheel Alignment and Their 4 Main Benefits

Wheel Alignment care

People know the term ‘wheel alignment’ and surely most people can figure out, in a general sense, what it is. Yet, most people don’t know what a wheel alignment actually is and why they are so important. There are many clues to understanding when your wheels are out of […]

Wheel Alignment care

What makes your Cars  Wheel Alignments So Important?

Helps with Reduced Tyre Wear

When your wheels are  out of alignment. Hence, causes the tyres to wear unevenly, Consequently either the left or right part of your tyres tread. The graph above shows you precisely what happens. We are in no doubt ,that this effect will shorten the life of your tyres. Thus causing unnecessary expense to the driver.

Gives your car Improved Handling

Once again we are sure that a car with wheels with correctly set alignment will be safer and therefore easier to drive. The effect of incorrect alignment can mean that your steering wheel pulls to one side and shakes. For this reason, it is not only annoying. But can affect your reaction time should you are manoeuvring around hazards. because uneven tread wear can also mean some compromised handling and safety issues. Worn out tread’s will not handle the car or disperse the water correctly.

Help’s promote  better and Safer Driving

Most of this has already been covered in our previous points, such as tire performance issues, reaction time, etc. It is also important to cover other areas where safety can be improved.

Wheels that are out of alignment causes excess stress on suspension parts, such as shocks and struts. Your car is designed to take impact straight and when you hit bumps in the road, your car’s suspension is working overtime. Suspension issues can be identified during and a wheel alignment to check on worn or compromised parts. It is important to ask your mechanic if a suspension check is included with this service.

The Top 7 Icy Road Myths

Extreme Winter Tyre Information

While it is true that some accidents on icy roads are the result of drivers not exercising due care in the face of a visually apparent hazard, the actual data shows that many cannot be classified this way. The reports show that it is everyday people, like you and […]

When i first read ans saw this article. naturally, I thought it might of been over the top for my UK readers. Of course, it is mainly about more extreme driving conditions. Hence, that we have in the average UK winter.

But on reflection, I have seen some stupid things that drivers have attempted to do in snow and icy conditions. We have all seen cars and vans abandoned at the side of the road. Especially, when caught out by a sudden blizzard.

Without saying this too many times, the best protection is to fit winter tyres in November. Hence, before the onset of winter. If you did nothing else, this would make snowy and icy driving much safer.

Extreme Winter Tyre Information Nightmare on the M11

Of course, the north of the UK usually receives the worse of the winter weather. But we all remember the chaos in the south when the M11 motorway was hit by a sudden snow storm from the east. For this reason, drivers were totally stranded and had to sleep in their cars overnight.

The main problem was that many cars were stranded on an incline, with summer tyres. This forced all the other traffic to back up. Consequently, the snow settled between the stranded cars making it impossible for them to move. massive tail backs made the situation grimmer. Leaving drivers stranded overnight on the motorway.

What a nightmare?

Porsche Winter Tyres

Porsche Winter Tyres

Porsche Winter Tyres

I dont often a single out specific cars. However in my opinion the Porsche is very special. However, I still think that the Porsche owners should think about fitting a set of winter tyres.

By doing this they will be able to drive much safer and with more confidence, should a rapid snow fall occur. What many drivers do not know is that  below 7°C the rubber compound in all summer tyres hardens, causing a drop in performance and an increase in braking distance by up to 12%.

Hence, this is the first important point to think about. Winter tyres have an added ingredient . Accordingly, in the tread and the rest of the tyre compound. This extra ingredient, is “Silica”. As a result the tyres do not harden as the temperature falls below 7 degrees.

Modern winter tyres have also many extra sipes built into them. These sipes are the tiny slits in the tread and shoulder of the tyres. These slits make a good job of removing any wet or snow from the tyres. Winter tyres are therfore, much safer than summer tyres when driving your Porsche in winter time.

General Grabber AT3-The latest tyre in the excellent Grabber range of 4×4 tyres

General Grabber AT3

I have used General Grabber AT tyres on previous Landrovers have been impressed. I see they have now launched the AT3 which looks great, but they don’t do a size to fit my 20″ wheels (which I regret getting if I am honest!) So I was wondering what size […]

General Grabber AT3

One of the down sides of marketing a tyre product comes when a popular tyre is replaced. Of course, I mean the general Grabber tyre range.  I still have some customers in Halifax Yorkshire, UK who drive about on the original grabbers.

Because it fits Land Rovers, then we sell many of these tyres to farmers. Because of this then the farmers are the worse people for changing their minds. Especially when they like a certain product.

In the farmers defence, they do take notice of what we say and also recommend? In the early days we were getting rave revues about the original grabber tyres. SUV owners and Land Rover owners were very impressed with the product.General Grabber AT3

The tyre did a good job in the rougher conditions of a farm and were reasonably quiet on  tarmac roads. Then as in most western markets, General decided to make a better tyre , the grabber AT2. This was all well and good. But it replaced the standard Grabber and we had to resell it. It was a case of “if its not broken dont fix it”.

General Grabber AT3

The new AT2 tyre was a little more aggressive and together with new compounds, was actually a better tyre. For that reason, we sold the replacement tyre type to the same farmers and SUV owners and life went on.

Then the other saturday morning, a guy came in to order two more AT2’s . He was highly delighted with them and wanted two more. When we checked his tyre size, we soon found out that general had now moved onto the AT3 tyres.

At first the guy was not a “happy bunny” he went away sulking. Because there was only the AT3 available now in his tyre size. He said that he could get them on the internet?

Off he went, but he rang us up about an hour later. Thus , to order two for him. We are general tyre dealers and would be very surprised if we ever were beaten on price. Therefore , this job was no exception and we received the order for the tyres.

Continental Winter Tyres-Braking on Snow a great video

Continental winter tyres one of the best

As winter approaches. Then many writers including myself start to publish winter tyre advice ! So, the past few years have seen a great increase.

Importantly,  in the number of safety conscious drivers. Of course, fitting Continental winter tyres onto their vehicles.  Naturally, because of the onset of winter !  Then the most popular time to have your winter tyres fitted is the November period.

October is the time when tyre writers start to put together their articles. Of course, about the safety aspects of winter tyres and other related products.

This particular video is  indeed produced by Continental tyres. Continental winter tyres are one of the best on the market and often come top in the international motoring magazine tyre tests.

I am fortunate that we are the Continental winter tyres dealer in the Halifax area of Yorkshire here in the UK.

One of the good things about Continental winter tyres, is the fact that they have a vast range of winter tyre products, including winter tyres to fit the huge range of tyres that are fitted to SUV vehicles. These  winter tyres are becoming more and more popular as the drivers of this type of car realise that they do need winter tyres to drive more safely in the winter weather.

Another good point about Winter Tyres is the amount of testing that they carry out. These type of tyres are tested extensively in all the

Continental winter tyres
New Continental winter TS850

types of winter conditions that are possible. When they are satisfied about the quality of the product then they submit them for testing against their competitors tyres.

This can be seen with the new Conti Winter Contact TS 810 tyre. This tyre came out tops in recent winter tyre tests in Germany.

Winter tyre tips

Winter tyre tips

Tyre testing is an essential part of reporting about winter tyre products. Accordingly, these tests are carried out under very strict supervision. In the early days, winter tyres were thought to be just a gimmick. Hence, to help the motorists part with their money.

As time went by, winter tyres were becoming more acceptable. Of course, I think it was becoming recognised that tread designs and the tyre compounds were becoming more relevant. As expected, new chemicals were added to keep the tyre rubber more supple in cold weather.

The cold has always been the enemy of rubber products. Thus, making them hard and rigid. Tyres were no different. Things changed when “Silica” was added to the tread compound. Of course, with silica added, then the tyres became more flexible and therefore more responsive, in freezing cold weather.

Along with different tread design, including many new sipes added, winter tyres became the new buzz word. In the past ten years we at Pellon Tyres here in Halifax, have sen a massive rise in the popularity of winter tyres.

The increase in sales has benefited drivers who previously would not had been able to drive their cars in bad icy and snowy conditions. Most of our winter tyre sales came from word of mouth recommendations from friends and relatives.

Until recent years much of the Autocar team was skeptical about winter rubber. They were called a conspiracy designed by the car and tyre manufacturers to get us to part with our hard earned folding for something that we don’t strictly need. But then we tried some, at which point opinions on the subject changed completely.
