Pirelli grips talks with drivers over F1 wet tyres

Pirelli grips

Flash by Shekhar Dhingra / 13 hrs ago Pirelli racing director Mario Isola met with Formula 1 drivers at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to discuss how to improve its wet tyres. The performance of the wet Pirelli was criticised by several drivers after the rain-hit Brazilian Grand Prix […]

I must admit, that it has been a “topsy turvy ride” when assessing the good and the bad points about the involvement of Pirelli tyres in the F1 racing scene.

pirelli have certainly given the sports writers, something to write about. In my opinion the main feature of contention, has indeed been the compound differentials.

Pirelli have changed around the compounds to try make more interesting racing. Well it certainly worked?.

Expensive Part-Worn Tyres-How a £10 part-worn tyre can cost you £2,500 and you could lose your driving licence

Expensive Part-Worn Tyres

SAVING cash by buying old tyres might seem like a quick-fix solution for motorists. Soaring petrol prices, insurance and road tax costs, mean running a vehicle can be a very expensive business. Drivers can face a maximum fine of up to £2,500 via courts if their cars are stopped […]

Expensive Part-Worn TyresExpensive Part-Worn Tyres

I tried to sift out the type of people that would buy these tyres? In fact the thing stood out like a “sore thumb”. it was the young drivers that we were losing. Therefore, the young drivers must be buying part-worns.

I started to ask some young drivers, including my own daughter. Brooke is her name and she drives a two year old Ford Escort. Brooke has a good job at M and S in Keightley. Naturally, we give Brooke any tyres that she requires.

So it was slightly misleading, but I asked her the question,”where would you buy your tyres”and “what would you pay for them”. I was amazed by her reply. She said that she would just go for the cheapest tyres? and had seen some for sale at £20 each, these were the ones for her?

I was gobsmacked ? she truly did not know what these tyres were and did not care, as long as they were cheap. Of course, she spends a fortune on makeup  and clothes, but would buy the cheapest tyres.

This must be the same for millions of young people, I am sure that she would not be on her own when forming this opinion.

More than £3 million part-worn tyres were sold last year in the UK as drivers looked to save cash. Soaring petrol prices, insurance and road tax costs, mean running a vehicle can be a very expensive business.

BMW Winter tyres: Are they worth it? We certainly think that they are a major road safety improvement.

BMW Winter tyres

BMW Winter tyres

Snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures bring their own unique motoring issues. Specially developed winter tyres give added security when the temperatures dip, but running an alternative set of rubber has traditionally been considered a cost too far by many British drivers, who don’t think UK winters are harsh enough […]

Hope you noticed that I used the word safety in the post title. Of course, as the owner of Pellon Tyres in Halifax Yorkshire, I genuinely believe in what I say. Over the years I have preached to my customers the benefits of fitting winter tyres to their cars.

I must admit though that things are getting better, thanks to great articles like this. Modern cars are getting faster and have excellent braking systems. They are however heavy vehicles, which can cause them to skid and lose grip in wet and snowy weather.

I take the BMW winter tyres as an example. However, the owners of these cars seem reluctant to part with their cash and need winter tyres as much as any other brand and model of car.

However, the range of winter tyres available is bigger than ever, and UK consumers are finally realising that their benefits far outweigh their cost. That’s because these products offer added grip and stability even in less-than-harsh conditions, which means they can easily be used on wet roads whenever the temperature falls below 7 degrees Celsius.

Winter tyres-General

This looks at winter tyres from the French angle. hence, this is most applicable to the Britains that will taking their annual winter vacation to the snow resort in the French Alps.

Millions take the pilgrimage, year after year. Winter tyres are imperative, if you are to travel up the mountains to the ski resorts.

WITH the first of the winter snows seeing ski stations opening for the November 11 holiday weekend, drivers are also having to think about winter tyres and whether to use snow chains.

There is a mind-boggling variety of options – winter/snow tyres, ice tyres, studded tyres or the choice between chains or snow socks – but the basic decision depends on where you live.

Of course you will require more than winter tyres. In all cases, drivers should stock up on de-icing accessories and take warm clothes, gloves, blankets, water and food in case they break down. A fluorescent vest and a warning triangle are already compulsory.

Winter Car Care-How to look after your car during the winter months

Winter Car Care

Brrrr! Winter Car Care; Here it comes again, winter and all the horrors that go with it, from black ice to carol singers. It’s a tough time, not just for the car but for the driver too. It makes sense to check the car now and take some precautions before you find […]

This is a thorough and extensive article. Hence, about the correct way to winterise your car. Because the better prepared your car is then the safer you will be when driving in the harsh winter conditions. Here in Halifax Yorkshire, UK we have already seen possible signs of a hard winter.

Of course, we have already witnessed a snowfall in early November. It was enough give a five inch covering of snow .Consequently we were inundated with motorists wanting to buy winter tyres. Our winter tyre hotel soon emptied of snow tyres as our customers flocked in the change into  their winter tyres from summer tyres.

Check the tyres and if they’re even near the limit replace them – you’ll be glad you did when you have to brake hard on an icy road. It might be worth considering a set of winter tyres, something that is much more common on the Continent but which can make all the difference in the harsher months. If not, then a set of snow chains can be very effective if you’re in a rural area.

Sumitomo Tyres- buys Micheldever Tyre Services for £215m-Great News from Japan

Sumitomo Tyres

Micheldever supplies around six million tyres a year to more than 6,000 retailers and direct to motorists Britain’s second biggest tyre maker has been snapped up by Sumitomo Rubber Industries for £215 million, the latest in a series of post-Brexit takeovers by Japanese firms. Micheldever Tyre Services, based in […]

Sumitomo Tyres

Above anything else this shows us that global companies such as Sumitomo have confidence in the UK economy after the Brexit vote.

As a tyre retailer here in Halifax, Yorkshire I also think it is good news. As a result of this acquisition, we will feel more confident for the future. I regard Sumitomo tyres as the best option going forward. Rumors have been going about in the past two years about who would buy MD’s. The worst scenario for me would have been the rumor that Michelin tyres were interested.

Here at Pellon Tyres, we have been very close allies of MD’s ever since their takeover of Southam Tyres. Eric Roberts has always regarded Alan Baldwin(MD sales director)as a friend and business advisor.

MD’s are Britain’s second largest tyre wholesaler.Hence, have now been snapped up by Sumitomo Rubber Industries for £215 million. As a result, are the latest in a series of post-Brexit takeovers by Japanese firms. I am convinced that Japan see the UK as an increasingly important trading partner on the doorstep of the EU.

MD’s(Micheldever Tyre Services), first started out and are now based in Hampshire. After a few sales including the original owner Tony Todd. Hence, was sold by private equity firm Graphite Capital. Thus, meaning the country’s two largest tyre wholesalers now belong to Japanese companies. As a result, following Itochu’s acquisition of Stapleton tyres and Kwik-Fit  back in 2011.

Japanese companies spent over £27 billion on 43 British firms in 2016, up from £7.6 billion for 29 the previous year, according to figures from Dealogic.

Tyres Save Fuel-Learn how your tyres can help you save fuel

Tyres Save Fuel

Tyres are a crucial element of your vehicles and inextricably linked to performance ; they provide fleet managers, or anyone responsible for fleets, with immediate notice of any potential issue. Having properly managed tyres as part of an efficient tyres maintenance system can only benefit fleets as well as […]

Tyres Save Fuel

Tyres Save Fuel

This is a fact that the general public do not know about. The title should actually be “correctly inflated tyres” save money. This is one of the things that I always try to explain. Accordingly, correctly inflated tyres will give the driver the correct miles to the gallon.

Under inflated tyres will increase the amount of fuel that you car will use. The word that we use in the trade is “rolling resistance”. Hence, tyre manufacturers are always trying to improve, rolling resistance. For this reason, the tyres will be more efficient and also fuel Tyres Save Fuel.

There has been a lot of debate upon the importance or implementation of all-season tyres and whether they are really effective enough at providing consistent performance throughout all weather conditions, or whether it is better to use low-rolling resistance tyres. The latter, in general, minimize wasted energy by decreasing required rolling effort; and in the case of automotive applications, are particularly effective for improving vehicles’ fuel efficiency: approximately 5–15% of the fuel consumed by a typical car may be used to overcome rolling resistance.

Vredestein Winter Campaign 2016

Vredestein Winter Campaign 2016

Although we are now half way through the 2016 winter. Hence, I would like to comment about the Vredestein supply chain. Of course, as far as I am concerned, there has not been one?

Here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax Yorkshire, UK. As a result, made the right decision to start to sell the Mother brand of Vredestein, Apollo tyres. This decision meant that I have had a good supply situation.Especially of winter tyres.

However, my friend in Huddersfield, decided to continue selling the excellent Vredestein tyre brand. As stated, Apollo bought out Vredestein a couple of years ago now. I did fear that things would change?

Apollo tyres changed the Vredestein management, making some redundancies. Things like this always happen as the mother company starts to throw their weight about and make changes.

As I have said, things like this always happen. As a result of the takeover, then Vredestein tyre supplies began to run short. Tyre retailers, such as my friend in Huddersfield were very badly let down. Thus, by lack of Vredestein stock available.

Lets hope that things improve in 2017, but i doubt it?

Bridgestone DriveGuard Run Flat Tyres

When run flat tyres first appeared. Hence, the tyre companies gave us all sorts of reasons for their very existence. Therefore I was very sceptical when they first came out. In fact I must say that I did not think that they could possibly keep going.

What are run-flat tyres?

I gradually got used to them. As a result of educating myself. Thus, about a more indepth understanding as to why this development was necessary. The original reason was to do with the environment.

Consequently, a very slim spare wheel would be much lighter than the regular wheel fitted to the vehicle. Many things were tried by car manufacturers to reduce the overall weight of the car. Hence, in some ways, car makers see the spare wheel as a necessary evil, but run-flat tyres are one solution that means a spare wheel doesn’t need to be carried.

Eric Roberts

Bridgestone Driveguard Run Flat Tyres

Bridgestone DriveGuard Run Flat Tyres

Spare wheels take up space. Modern car design increasingly likes to use every available millimetre. So there isn’t always room for one. Space-saver spare wheels take up less boot space. While many car makers substitute a spare wheel for a puncture repair kit. However, these aren’t much use if you’ve got anything worse than a nail in the tyre, as the sealant solution is only really designed to fill small holes. So rather than carry these alternatives, some car makers offer run-flat tyres on their cars as a means of getting you home should you suffer a puncture.
