Most, brands of tyres, were originally made to provide the vehicle with traction. Of course, that could go anywhere. They were developed to give the car driver excellent durability. Whilst also giving good wear and traction in any weather that the vehicle could come up across, including heavy snow falls.
Pirelli tyres, wear technically designed with the help of racing tyres and were derived from a “cut-chip and tear-resistant tread compound”. Naturally, this would give the tyres tread exceptional grip and wear resistance when driving on roads that would normally tear tyres to shreds. Consequently, such as gravel roads.
Flash by Shekhar Dhingra / 13 hrs ago Pirelli racing director Mario Isola met with Formula 1 drivers at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to discuss how to improve its wet tyres. The performance of the wet Pirelli was criticised by several drivers after the rain-hit Brazilian Grand Prix […]
I must admit, that it has been a “topsy turvy ride” when assessing the good and the bad points about the involvement of Pirelli tyres in the F1 racing scene.
pirelli have certainly given the sports writers, something to write about. In my opinion the main feature of contention, has indeed been the compound differentials.
Pirelli have changed around the compounds to try make more interesting racing. Well it certainly worked?.

Only a couple of years ago we had a clear distinction between summer tyres and winter tyres. This were much easier then?
Moving on to today’s tyre market, things are very different. Tyre manufacturers are capitalising. Hence, on the fact that motorists are indeed thinking more on the lines of safety. So, are fitting more and more winter tyres.
Of course, there are different types of tyres. Consequently, match different weather and road conditions. Tread pattern plays a major role. Because, it is the part of the tyre that comes into contact with the road. Naturally, providing most of the traction.
Winter tyres are totally different to summer tyres. Therefore, in today’s tyre market then winter have to made in many sizes. So, to meet the demand of different types of vehicles.
Pirelli All-Season Tyres to meet the demands of SUV’s
All the latest powerful SUV’s have to be catered for? winter performance tyres have millions of small slits. Known as “sipes” built into the tread pattern. Of course pirelli scorpion winter tyres are an excellent choice and are comparable to the pirelli scorpion verde tyres.
As a result, which allow more rubber to be in contact with the road. While at the same time dispelling the water , slush and snow away. Due to the action of these variable sized sipes.
Pirelli are the latest tyre maker to introduce a new tyre. Hence, that are compatible for summer and winter driving . Subsequently, in countries that do not have harsh winters. Italy is a good example. Of course including here in the UK.
Many European countries do have a winter tyre law. This makes it compulsory to fit winter tyres in certain months. Whereas Italy does enforce the use of winter tyres. Then the UK do not?
Pirelli All-Season Tyres look for the winter tyre emblem
Snow can always be a problem. Especially, if you live near the Alps? Italian Law requires that all cars are fitted with either winter tyres or snow chains on most major roads; including motorways; from 15 November-15 April .
Indecently, snow tyres are defined by a symbol on the tyre sidewall. This has a three-peak-mountain with snowflake embedded on the sidewall.
WINTER SOTTOZERO 3 Latest Pirelli winter offering
Of course, just like all tyre manufacturers then Pirelli have brought out their latest winter offering. Including the pirelli sottozero run flat winter tyres. Importantly for owners of vehicles with the run-flat technology tyre fitted and living in snowy areas.
Like the UK. So in France, winter tyres have not been made mandatory. However they insist on snow chains and spikes. Especially when driving to the ski resorts . Say in the “Alps”.
The solution may be to carry a set of all-season tyres, which can then be used on snow roads as well provided it has the “three-peak-mountain with snowflake” emblem mark on it.
Acknowledging tyre growth in all-season tyres in the UK, Pirelli continues to recommend the use of winter tyres for its target performance car market, especially in extreme conditions.

Wow I love pictures like this? A High speed Pirelli Tyre Change
The speed in which the guys in F1 racing change over the wheels and tyres on a pit stop is nothing more than incredible. Although I have never attended an F1 change over, the closest i have is on a F3 visit to Snetterton in Norfolk.
This was an invitation courtesy of Yokohama tyres. They were supporting the touring car championship. Also there were Avon tyres. Avon were supporting the F3 racing. This type of racing is very close to what you would see in the F1 pits. I was amazed at the systems that were in place for a quick tyre change over and the speed in which they did it.
All action, it reminds a little bit about my days at Goodyear when I volunteered to fit tyres to rally cars for Goodyear in the late seventies. Thing were not as quick as the F3 or F1 wheel and Pirelli tyre change, because time was not as important.
We would change the whole wheels from built up wheels the same as all the other race teams have to do. The difference was that the rally cars had four or five wheel nuts to change. This was similar to the standard car wheels that we all drive about in.
Pirelli Tyre Change
pirelli tyres uk were also involved in rallying at that time. We were owned by Goodyear tyres and so all the tyres that were fitted were Goodyear rally tyre products. When the rally cars came into the parking pits, we had to change the already built up wheels.
We would then attend to the tyres that were removed by either repairing them or fitting new tyres. All this was done at speed , but not as fast as the F1 teams? I remember it was very hard work, and the weather was horrendous, including a blizzard and torrential rain.
In the end though it was good fun and a pleasure to be part of a team, and later on in life brought back great memories.
Pirelli Intelligent Tyres Data streamed from hi-tech rubber set to transform performance
Nothing ever stops still.Especially, in the hectic world of tyres? The major tyre companies are always looking at ways to better their rivals. In my opinion, it all benefits the end user, the everyday drivers like you and me.
This is the latest disclosure about the Pirelli’s intelligent tyres, the P-ZERO tyres, seen here being tested on a Le-Ferrari in Italy.
These new tyres are being tested on the new Ferrari FXXK track car. Just like other tyre manufacturers. Pirelli are at the thick end of research and development.
The tyre world is not going to be left behind.naturally, when it comes to involvement in car technology. So, and the advancements in car electronics.
This applies to whether the tyres are for the motorsport industry. Thus, or the everyday car that we use on our roads. In a recent interview with Maurizio Boiocchi of Pirelli tyres, he said…”We’re continuously working on the P Zero family of products. Specifically to have electronics working inside the tyre interacting with the main computer in the car ; something more than a tyre pressure monitoring system,”
Which works from signals emitted from sensors. These sensors are about the size of the British 50p coin. The sensors are fitted in each quadrant of the tyre belts.
Pirelli Intelligent Tyres
The equipment in the Pirellis intelligent tyres. Hence, is been tested on the LA Ferrari-based FXX K track special cars. It is to be used on supercar street cars within a five year period.
The Pirelli’s intelligent tyres. Can pick up the friction coefficient which can send information about the tyres. The sensors can give information. Therefore, such as longitudinal. Also, lateral and radial acceleration. So, as well as the temperature and pressure of the tyres.
Pirelli Intelligent Tyres. As a result, then send the information back the cars ECU which helps to calibrate other important factors such as steering and braking. This can enable things like the softening of the suspension on real time race events. Finally, they can also combine with the cars traction control system which would enhance the cars braking capabilities.
F1 News. Michelin tells Crash.net it will consider a return to Formula 1 should the FIA accept its proposals to create tyres that a driver can ‘use at the limit at all times’.. Read more at Crash.net!
This is going to be interesting times ahead for the tyre world. Michelin could be interested in bidding for the right to supply F1 tyres in the near future?
This would be if the FIA look at using tyres.Hence, with a different size. So, say from 13 inch wheels to 18 inch wheels and giving the teams a choice of tyre compounds. hence, to use at their own discretion at the different race venues. This would add a whole list of new skills. Especially, for the drivers and ground teams to take in to consideration on the very race day.
Winning a race. Thus, would have to take into consideration the correct choice of tread and compound. Naturally, on that particular day and add more exciting to the proceedings.
According to Michelin motorsport director Pascal Couasnon. For this reason, the French tyre giants would be interested in bidding for F1 tyre supplier if there was to be a change in the size of the F1 tyres and also a change in tyre compound strategy.
This is also the aim of the current tyre supplier Pirelli. Who have been part of car testing on 18 inch tyres. Martin Brundle completed a few demo laps in a GP2 test car equipped with 18″ tyres around Monaco the other Friday.
There has also been much speculation about the tyre companies wanting to use a variety of compounds. These would be used at the discretion of the F1 teams and drivers during a race. This could give the racing even more bite. The teams would choose their own tyres and compounds, meaning that the cars could and would be racing on different tyres.
This would mean that the team making the best choices would have a better chance of competing for the winners podium, making racing more interesting and exact. If these rules came in then Michelin F1 interest could be on the cards,

This picture of a fling rally is just awesome? it also re-enforces my point about the tyre companies involvement in motorsport . Especially, from the research and development angle.
The advertising factor also comes into to it. Tghus, with the famous yellow and red Pirelli logo. As expected, clearly to be seen on the excellent photo shot from Pirelli motorsport .
Pirelli motorsport are one of the world’s leading tyre manufacturers. Hence, in the field of supplying their tyres to the car racing events.
The giant Italian tyre. For this reason, the company manufacture tyres for race events as diverse as “vintage car rallying “to their involvement in “F1” racing.
Like most tyre companies. Pirelli motorsport helps them to try out new products and materials. Of course, that are used in making a tyre. We have all heard about the controversy involving the different tyre compounds in the past two years with F1 cars. This type of thing is just learning curbs and Pirelli have now sorted their problems out.
Pirelli motorsport began involvement in rallying way back in 1973. From then to 2010 Pirelli motorsport tyres have recorded no fewer than 25 rally championship wins. Pirelli motorsport became the official tyre suppliers to the WRC (World Rally Championships) between 2008 and 2010. This gave Pirelli maximum publicity and exposure all around the world.
They then became tyre suppliers to the WRC academy in 2011 and 2012, giving the younger drivers the experience driving on their 8 different types of rally tyres. These range from the “RX” which is a tyre for dry or damp asphalt, to the “Scorpion” which is constructed in the form of the Asymmetric and directional pattern design based on Pirelli’s many years of experience in rallies on gravel roads.

Many of us. Including myself, could not foresee the massive rise in the growth of the SUV and Crossover vehicle market. I first saw some of these vehicles for the first time.Especially, when I was attending a tyre testing day in Austria. The tyre dealers that were invited were all Vredestein (now Apollo Vredestein) stockists.
Some of these vehicles are very powerful. Therefore, and sort of went against the trend of greener cars. In general cars were getting smaller.Hence, until the upsurge of the SUV and later the smaller Crossovers
This meant that tyres had also to change. These cars that included Porsche’s and the VW Tiguan. The BMW X5 and X3, the Audi Q5. Not forgetting the Range Rover Evoque. These were all high performance cars and needed the tyres to go with them.
These cars had also to be more environmentally friendly. The tyres became larger in wheel size, some as large as 22 and 23 inch alloy’s. The also had to be quieter with good handling qualities as well as handling the power of some of these vehicles.
Pirelli Scorpion Verde Tyres
Many tyre companies came up with their own designs, including the introduction of the Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyre. These are truly Eco-friendly SUV tyres. For this reason, the Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres offers very good rolling resistance. As expected, and is one of the top tyre products to offer this. A better rolling resistance gives the vehicle a better fuel economy and therefore greener credentials.
Pirelli claim that these tyres are much lighter in weight because it uses fewer materials and will last longer than some of its counterparts. The new Scorpion Verde has been tested by VW and the VW group were the first car maker to fit the Verde onto its Volkswagen Touareg SUV.
Pirelli now make an all-season version of this tyre, for the SUV owner who may require more traction in the winter months.
Cinturato All-Season designed for markets like the UK Pirelli has launched a new all-season tyre aimed at increasing premium seasonal tyre sales amongst daily drivers living in markets with tempera…
Pirelli is just one of the major tyre companies. To aim for the top spot. I do like the idea of a winter tyre that also has the potential to have a puncture protection system inside. Now bringing out the Pirelli Cinturato all Season tyres.
Pirelli Cinturato All Season tyre launch took place in Sicily
Pirelli tyres look to have gone for the middle option. Especially, between summer and winter tyres. Thus, by developing a new “all weather tyre” into their range, the Pirelli cinturato all season tyre.
The tyre was launched in late January 2015.As expected, on the holiday island of Sicily off the coast of Italy. This was aimed at signifying the different climates. To show, that the tyre can work well in, balancing the snow covered peaks of Mt Etna. With the warmer area nearer the coast.
This is the first time that Pirelli have produced such a tyre. Therefore, it will be aimed at increasing premium seasonal tyre sales. For this reason, amongst daily drivers living in markets with temperate European climates and especially in urban areas.
The southern parts of Europe usually stay on the mid side in winter. Because drivers were often taking the odd trip. Into mountain regions. Where the weather is colder with some snow. The tyre has the three peaks “three peaks mountain snowflake” symbol making the tyre a good winter tyre and it is available in 15/16/ and 17-inch tyre sizes.
Pirelli Cinturato All Season tyre
The mountain snowflake symbol. Means that the tyre will qualify for the countries that have to fit winter tyres. Thus by law at certain times of the year. Gregorio Borgo, Pirelli’s general manager. Said that the new tyre would target a large part of the car tyre market. About 74% in fact, where the winters are not so severe.Naturally, with warmer summers. The Pirelli Cinturato All Season tyre will be ideal for all but the harshest winter and summers, and perform just as well under all weathers.
In my opinion, the winters are changing. I am lucky enough to have a holiday home in the south-west of France.
Accordingly, the winters are usually very mild, but we can get winds from Russia that can bring the temperature down to -17 c and last winter we had 10 inches of snow to contend with, lucky I had a set of winter tyres fitted. But I suppose that a few of days it was back up to 15 c. These Pirelli’s would probably be the perfect tyres for this type of climate?
Pirelli Cinturato All Season can also be puncture protected.
This is one of the big pluses for me. Because in a fact, this new tyre can also be sold with the new self-seal technology. That many tyre companies are developing. Pirelli’s version is known as “seal inside”.
This gives these tyres. Therefore, the edge and adds another layer of safety features into the tyre product. The self-seal does what it says. Because, if a screw penetrates the tyre. Thus, the area or hole will be sealed. The car and driver will be able to continue their journey. This is really useful on a stinking winters day. When your hands could freeze off when having to change a wheel because of a puncture, in my opinion, this would sell a tyre, not just the all season bit but the whole package, including the self-seal.
Pirelli Cinturato All Season tyre
This would be a good product here in the UK especially in the south where the winters are milder. Figures show that the winter tyre market here in the UK is less than 2%, but I think that the figure is higher than that and the winter tyre market is now growing at a fast pace , if sales here in Halifax Yorkshire UK are anything to go by.

Of course, there is no doubt about it ! That Pirelli are very closely linked to the beginning of motorsport. As we know it today. So, the Italian’s first ever victory. Came in the then prestigious Peking to Paris race in 1907.
Even after such an early start to the development of tyres. Pirelli started to develop the knowledge to develop different compounds and tread patterns. Hence, that would affect the performance of their tyres in racing events. For example different tyres for different weather conditions and road surfaces.
Pirelli rally tyres in WRC 1973
Consequently, Pirelli were involved in the World Rally Championships (WRC) way back at the start in 1973. So, many of the cars that have rallied on the Pirelli rally tyres. Have won no fewer than 25 championship races. Significantly, at one period they became the official tyre suppliers to the WRC series. Moreover, a thing that they are now emulating in Formula 1 racing. In my opinion the rally tyres are the most difficult to develop. Due to their demanding challenges.Having to endure not only the weather ! But massive differences in the type of terrain. Thus, that the tyres operate on. The Pirelli rally tyres have to be good in different weather conditions. Including, snow and ice to dust dry mountainous conditions. Consequently, that you can get in some South American rallies, such as in Argentina.
Pirelli Rally tyres now active in the European Rally Championships
Bringing things back up to date. Pirelli rally tyres have had a great start to the 2014 rally season. So, taking the first three places in the Janner rally in Austria. Of course, in the first round of the European championships. Ford Fiesta R5’s took first and third place with the two Fords being split by the Peugeot 207 super 2000 driven by Robert Consani.
The cars were driving on hard packed snow and ice and were fitted with Pirelli rally 135/85×15 SA15 containing 2 mm studs that were designed for the 15 inch wheels.
The Pirelli rally tyres performed to the top of their abilities
Proving decisive to the results with the performance on the ice and snow second to none.
I always bring up the fact that in the seventies. I was one of the guys that was part of the Goodyear tyre rally tyre back-up team, and went to many of the local and British championships. In those days Pirelli were big rivals. But took place in the bigger events and consequently I never came across them very often.
I have always loved to watch the rallying and the various tyre companies that now support the sport have given me a renewed interest, I can now watch the Motoring channel on TV, without getting freezing cold, but I try to attend some events in the summer, and will be attending some rally-cross events courtesy of Yokohama tyres.
Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles.
Like most of the other major tyre companies, Pirelli tyres are striving to compete in the drive to produce a greener and more fuel efficient tyre.
The new tyre from Pirelli is the Scorpion Verde, the Verde obviously meaning “green” in English.
The new tyre is an all “season tyre” and will be aimed at the ever growing SUV and Crossover vehicle market. Because the manufacture of the compounds will include a product by the name of Highly Aromatic Oil free or “HAOF” for short, they will use 8% less carbon based oil materials and therefore be safer to the environment, hence the term Verde.
The new Pirelli tyres will bring the level of tyre comfort and quietness to a new level, whilst also providing the driver with a higher mileage and reduce their driving costs.
Drivers of SUV and Crossover vehicles are not known to buy these types of cars to save money on fuel consumption, but for other reasons which may include a higher driving position and a greater feeling of safety, with better vision when driving. These are the reasons that my wife gave when buying her new Mitsubishi Outlander. What the fuel consumption of the car did made little difference to her choice.
We do however have a significant proportion of our customers now driving these vehicles and when the price of fuel was sky high, they did look at things to help them with their consumption. I noticed that they were looking more and more at the information on the new tyre labelling system.
We also noticed that the cars were coming out on summer tyres and our customers in Halifax were getting concerned about the winter. Would this type of tyre be good enough for the winter? The answer came when we had our first bad winter for many years and these vehicles were hopeless in any type of snowy and icy conditions.
This is probably one of the reasons that Pirelli tyres used their new product as an “all season tyre” I am not sure that an all season tyre would be good enough in the hilly Halifax area, but would be ideal for use in the flatter and milder regions of the UK.
The Pirelli Tyres Scorpion Verde summer pattern
This tyre comes out in a normal type of summer tread pattern and has a fuel rating of C and a wet grip rating of B, which is up there with the rest of them. The tyre is now approved for use on some VW models and Complies with the 2012 EU Regulation on the reduction of noise, resulting in improved driving comfort. The SCORPION VERDE™ has been created by Pirelli, to take full advantage of their most modern materials, tyre structures and newly developed tread patterns in order to guarantee savings, in respect for our environment, driver comfort and safety on all road surfaces.
The tyres are available in sizes from 16 to 20 inch wheel sizes which covers most SUV and Crossover tyre fitments.
The Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season
SCORPION VERDE™ ALL SEASON is a Pirelli Green Performance Crossover & SUV tyre are made for the drivers who look for a higher mileage and a small amount of off-road performances without having to purchase winter tyres, without giving up comfort and safety on all road surfaces and in every conditions. Both these tyres are well worth a try, when you have to buy a new set of tyres for your SUV or Crossover vehicle.
