Pirelli Rally tyres date back to 1973

Of course, there is no doubt about it ! That Pirelli are very closely linked to the beginning of motorsport. As we know it today. So, the Italian’s first ever victory. Came in the then prestigious Peking to Paris race in 1907.

Even after such an early start to the development of tyres. Pirelli started to develop the knowledge to develop different compounds and tread patterns. Hence, that would affect the performance of their tyres in racing events. For example different tyres for different weather conditions and road surfaces.

Pirelli rally tyres in WRC  1973

Consequently, Pirelli were involved in the World Rally Championships (WRC) way back at the start in 1973. So, many of the cars that have rallied on these famous tyres. Have won no fewer than 25 championship races.

Significantly, at one point, they became the official tyre suppliers to the WRC series. Moreover, they are now emulating in Formula 1 racing. In my opinion, the rally tyres are the most difficult to develop. Due to their demanding challenges,.

Having to endure not only the weather ! But massive differences in the type of terrain. Thus, that the tyres operate on. The Pirelli rally tyres have to be good in different weather conditions. Including, snow and ice to dust dry mountainous conditions. Consequently, that you can get in some South American rallies, such as in Argentina.

Pirelli Rally tyres are now active in the European Rally Championships

Bringing things back up to date.  Pirelli have had a great start to the 2014 rally season. So, taking the first three places in the Janner rally in Austria. Of course, in the first round of the European championships. Ford Fiesta R5’s took first and third place, with the two Fords being split by the Peugeot 207 super 2000 driven by Robert Consani.

The cars were driving on hard-packed snow and ice and were fitted with Pirelli rally 135/85×15 SA15 studs that contained 2 mm studs that were designed for the 15-inch wheels.

The Pirelli rally tyres performed to the best of their abilities

Proving decisive to the results, the performance on the ice and snow was second to none.
I always bring up the fact that I was in my seventies.  I was one of the guys that was part of the Goodyear tyre rally Back-Up Team and went to many of the local and British championships. In those days, Pirelli were big rivals. But took place in the bigger events and consequently, I never came across them very often.

I have always loved to watch rallying and the various tyre companies that now support the sport have given me a renewed interest, I can now watch the Motoring channel on TV without getting freezing cold, but I try to attend some events in the summer and will be attending some rally-cross events courtesy of Yokohama tyres.

Good article showing the new extensive range of Rally tyres

All this talk about rally tyres has renewed my interest and passion about the whole tyre scene. It takes me back to my early twenties, when I used to attend some of the British rallies, such as the Mintex rally here in the UK. It was one of my favourites because it took place in my beautiful county of Yorkshire and included great stages such as Dolby forest and the Yorkshire dales.
My first sight of a rally car flying through the air was with Goodyear tyres. The company that I was manager of. In those days, Goodyear tyres Equity no longer exists and is now called TyreServices GB Ltd.

Tyreservices introduced me to the rally scene by allowing me to sell Goodyear rally tyres to my local rally enthusiasts, the ground-level guys who took part in the local rally scene, mainly in their Mini’s and Ford Escorts.

Goodyear and Michelin rally tyres would attend the large rally’s. Consequently, much as they do today. With their big trucks that were equipped with tyre fitting machines . Complete with a huge stock of replacement tyres. I would go along to the rest and overnight area. Of course, during the rally and change the tyres to new ones when required. Although I am far away from an expert on rally tyres.

I have so called got a second wind of enthusiasm. Hence, this time I am the lucky owner of my very own tyre business. Here in Halifax, Yorkshire UK.
I am lucky . Because I do not have to follow any brand of tyres. So have become a keen follower of Michelin. Including, their involvement in the motorsport field.

Also, I  am a fan of Yokohama tyres .

Furthermore, there are also great sponsors in the world of motorsport. But, compared to Michelin, there are relative new boys on the block. I am also a keen watcher of the motors TV channel. Which keeps us all up to speed with most motoring events . Also the tyre company activity, of course.

Michelin rally tyres revive 70 and 80’ rally stars

The 1970’s and 1980s were very exciting times, with all sorts of car manufacturers bringing out rally versions of their new models. The attraction was, I think, the fact that the larger rallies were now shown on national TV. I will never forget when I first saw the Monte-Carlo rally with our great British Mini Copper’s doing so well. The French tyre company was also doing very well, and one of the star tyres was the TB15 tyre.

Michelin rally tyres were becoming the ones to use and became very popular on cars like the Sunbeam Tigers, MGB’s, Daimlers, and Lancia Fulvia. Not forgetting the Porsche 911’s, Michelin rally tyres also supported the Alpine Renault Works team with tyres.
The TB15 was originally built with different compounds, which were typed on the sidewalls in French. Just out of interest, these letters were. S-Sec French for dry and were slick tyres; T-Tous, which were an all-weather tyre; intermediate compound tyre; and finally P-Pluie, which means rain in French, which was a wet weather tyre.

Michelin have now revived the TB15 and have made it road legal. The tyres are E-marked with tread wear indicators and come with load and speed ratings.
The new tyres will be used as wet racing tyres in the vintage rally car events, as they always proved very popular the first time around.
Coming back to the modern rally era, there is no doubt that the new TB15 will be very popular on the Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique, which has attracted over 300 entrants for rally cars that took part in actual events between 1955 and 1980.

Michael TB15 rally tyres are making a comeback.

We responded to the request by many drivers who wished to rekindle the “rally stars” of the 1970s and 1980s by reviving the TB 15 tyres, as they were the most versatile rally car tyres.
These excellent mixed tyres provide the best performance on wet roads during vintage racing car rallies. I will be looking forward to watching the highlights on TV.
Also, as we all know, Michelin rally tyres will be heavily featured in the 2015 WRC rally events. Including an entry this year from Hyundai. which Hyundai motorsport mechanics and engineers will use on the new i20, and they will undoubtedly be using Michelin rally tyres.

Correct Michelin Winter Tyres

As I have explained many times,

Michelin develops tyres adapted to all weather situations. Because of the highest level of combined performance factors. Therefore, this is necessary to fit the vast range of vehicles that we now drive. Because, with Michelin, it is now easy to make the right choice!

Winter tyres are now available in sizes and load ratings. Consequently, to fit all types of vehicles,. Of course, the newest version, which  is the CrossClimate. Of course, this is a summer tyre that has some great winter qualities.

Thus, the Alpin series are available in many sizes and suitable for high-performance cars.

The Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 tyres are certified by car manufacturers for use on sporty, high-performance cars. Michelin Alpin 6 tyres have become famous for their winter tyre collection.

The winter tyres were developed from many years because of Michelin’s participation in motorsport events. Tyres were developed and engineered using the most up-to-date testing equipment that was available at the time.

Throughout the decades, Correct Michelin Winter Tyres

Cars have become faster and sturdier. Naturally, suspensions were getting more scientific. Computers were helping to put the testing data together. During race meetings, Michelin would try out different compounds and tread patterns. Their aim was to make the best-performing tyres on the market. Of course, this also applied to the winter tyres.

Tyre factories became much cleaner. Correct Michelin Winter Tyres

and this led to better quality tyre production. As a result, faulty tyres became a thing of the past. Winter tyres were made from different materials. Silica was the master new compound  ingredient. Making winter tyres more flexible and responsive to adverse road conditions.

Tread patterns also improved. Thus, the winter tyres are much quieter and more responsive to the needs of modern cars and SUV models.

In my opinion, Michelin has been ingenious.

Of course, what they have done is turn things around. For many years now, we have had an alternative to the summer tyre and the winter tyre. As expected, we know this tyre as the “all-weather” tyre.

The all-weather tyre has been on sale for years now. As a result, the phrase has become stale in the minds of drivers. Although most tyre manufacturers still make all-weather tyres,. Sales have been dropping over the years.

One of the reasons has been the significant improvement

Of the original winter tyres. These winter tyres are not the noisy monsters that they used to be. Winter tyres have been completely revitalised.

The addition of extra materials has brought winter tyres right up to date. Silica has been the main saviour. Therefore, winter tyres are now produced for most of the vehicles on today’s market.

It looked like the death of all-weather tyres.

The Michelin Climate Tyre: Revolutionising Halifax’s Roads

Greetings, fellow travellers! Let’s talk about a topic that has been attracting attention and tyres alike today: the Michelin CrossClimates tyre. If you aren’t familiar with it, you may be living under a rock or simply less tire-obsessed than I am. However, don’t worry; I’ve got you covered.

The Revolution’s Inception

For those of us who love driving, Michelin’s introduction of the Michelin CrossClimates tyre was like Christmas coming early. A tyre that could handle the erratic British weather without breaking a sweat was the simple yet audacious claim. This tyre is meant to keep us on the road safely and effectively, whether it’s pouring rain, shining or a little bit of both in one day (cue classic Halifax).

The Michelin Climate Tyre Is Loved in Halifax

I get your thought process, but can a tyre really be that good? Let’s dissect it, particularly for those of us who have trouble traversing Halifax’s picturesque—and occasionally difficult—roads.

1. Season-Wise Performance:
We in Halifax are used to weather that fluctuates as much as a teenager’s mood. That is exactly what the Michelin CrossClimates tyre is designed for. These tyres hold the road like a dream, whether it’s a chilly morning in Shibden Park or a rainstorm on Market Street. Driving may now be confident and smooth without any slippage or skidding.

2. Fuel Economy:
Given the current state of fuel prices, any savings are beneficial. Because of the reduced rolling resistance of these tyres, your automobile will use less gasoline. As a result, you not only drive safer but also pay less at the gasoline pump. I see that as a win-win situation.

3. Sturdiness:
Everyone has experienced potholes the size of a small dog and jagged debris that seems to emerge out of nowhere. Here, Michelin has our backs—or tyres, as it were. These infants are robust, designed to endure and survive the daily rigours of driving in our beautiful town.

The Local Effect

The Michelin Climate tyres have caused a stir not only across the world but also in Halifax ever since they were introduced. Many of my clients have come into my garage praising these tyres. A man from Sowerby Bridge even commented on how much safer and easier his trip has become, particularly on those days when the weather is erratic.

Local companies have also joined the trend. For example, delivery drivers are discovering that these tyres are a true game-changer. They can handle our mountainous terrain and tight turns with more ease thanks to the increased stability and efficiency, guaranteeing on-time deliveries even when the weather isn’t cooperating.

Giving Sustainability a Nod

In a time when everyone is attempting to do their part to protect the environment, Michelin has likewise ensured that their Michelin CrossClimates tyres are eco-friendly. Throughout their lifetime, they are intended to be more energy-efficient and require fewer raw materials. Thus, each time you drive, you’re not only assisting in lowering your carbon footprint but also securely reaching your destination.

Final Reflections ###

So, consider the Michelin CrossClimates tyres if you’re in the market for new tyres or are just curious about tyres. For a lot of people in Halifax, they have genuinely transformed the driving experience. These are well worth the money, regardless of the reason—unpredictable weather, the need for increased fuel economy, or simply the necessity for a more resilient tyre.

For more information or just to have a talk, stop by the garage. I’m here to keep your wheels turning safely and smoothly, as always.

People, drive carefully!

Thanks

The thing I love about this story, the Michelin classic, is the fact that this is what i was brought up on; all these different types of Michelin’s bring back great memories to me.

https://www.wintertyres-yorkshire.co.uk/continental-michelin-self-seal-tyre

The tyre industry has brought me a great life. And I feel very proud when I look back, knowing that I started off in the sixties and except for a couple of years, I have worked in the tyre industry for all my life.

This Michelin classic article helps me bring back many memories and the good old days!

michelin classic

Michelin classic is the true word when it comes to their history and the string of classic tyres that they have produced over the years, beginning with the classic “X” radial tyre, the tyre that was the envy of the tyre world.

Michelin then proceeded to improve on the “X” tyre, bringing out such well-known favourites as the “ZX” and the “XZX.”T and MX tyres.
The older guys will remember these steel-belted radials because no other tyre manufacturer could match the impressive mileage that you could get from these tyres.

The only slight downside that I remember was that they were a little prone to skidding in wet weather, but never the less, these were still the tyres to beat for quality and high mileage.

Michelin Classic

In the early days, I worked for a Dunlop Tyres-owned outlet. I can always remember that the Michelin product (that is now referred to as a Michelin classic) .

As a result, the Dunlop guys would slag me off.But I realised later that it was just jealousy .  I soon realised that whatever tyres we sold, you could not escape from the quality and class of the Michelin-designed products, that have now become a Michelin classic in their own right.

A little later on in my career,

I diverted to truck and earthmover tyres. So I missed some of Michelin’s car design tyres. As a result, such as the “XAS” and the “XVS,”. Which were developed for faster and more comfortable cars . Hence, they were coming mainly from Germany. For example, such as the BMW’s and the Mercedes sedan-type cars. These tyres provided

michelin classic

comfort and safety. As well as the now-legendary Michelin high mileage. Michelin were one of the first tyre companies to bring out their tyres. Thus, with different speed ratings,. That would suit this new type of car. That we were now seeing.
Hence, the French tyre giants have always commanded a premium price for their tyre products. But they have proved that time and time again the extra money has been well worth paying and in my opinion they are still the number one tyre company in the world, always striving to create better tyre products and new innovations.

Michelin Classic

Forward to 2024 then I still have fond memories about the classic range of tyres that Michelin produced during mu younger years. However some motorists diddnt like Michelin, thinking they were not very good in wet weather. However they did out last other manufacturers tyre products by at least twice.

Pellon Tyre and Auto-Centre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles.

Continental tyres do not like the term

all-season“. I too think that new terminology is required and is an old, stale tyre term.

The term of “all-season”, in my opinion, means neither one or another. It reminds me of poor quality and performance in any weather. The tyre was originally made for the motorists who did not want to change over from summer tyres to winter tyres.

It became a sort of half-way house,

if you get my drift. You will find that this is still the case today. In recent years, we have found that drivers are reverting to the real thing. Consequently, drivers are now buying winter tyres.

Also, companies such as Michelin, are bringing out a different winter/summer tyre combination, they call the  Cross/Climate. Continental tyres have also brought out the Continental Contact CT22. Different countries have different tyre requirements. Including Europe and the USA.

Testing Continental’s ExtremeContact DWS 06

The difference is in the north and south. The north being much colder and requiring winter tyres. The southern countries use mainly summer tyres. The different conditions, includes countries, like the UK.  In many parts of Europe, it’s the law for people to switch to winter tyres during the cold months or you’ll be fined.

The choice these days is fantastic. Tyre producers are bringing out new safer products all the time. There is a tyre out there to suit your driving conditions and pocket. If you are not sure, then call in to see your local independent tyre dealer.

Timing may be everything.

Certainly, in the Ultra High-Performance All-Season category, the timing was right for Continental when they launched the original Extreme Contact DWS. Six years later, it’s time for their next Ultra High-Performance All-Season tyre, the Extreme Contact DWS 06.

The Extreme Contact DWS06 is not available on the European tyre market. However, the ContiWinterContact™ TS 850 and the ContiWinterContact TS 830 are available to fit many car models.

Does this new design offer more than just a strong family resemblance?

Premium vs Budget Tyres Tyre Brands: What’s the Real Difference?

When it comes to tyres, the debate between economy and premium brands is a well-trodden path. It’s a decision every car owner faces, and while the allure of saving a few quid with economy tyres is tempting, the long-term benefits of premium tyres can’t be ignored. Let’s delve into the real differences and help you make an informed choice.

The Price Tag

Economy Tyres:
The most obvious advantage of economy tyres is their lower price. They’re an attractive option for anyone on a tight budget or for those who don’t drive often. The initial savings are significant, making it easier on the wallet upfront.

Premium Tyres:
On the flip side, premium tyres come with a higher price tag. Brands like Michelin, Continental, and Bridgestone invest heavily in research, development, and high-quality materials, which is reflected in the cost. However, this investment often pays off in the long run.

Performance and Safety-Premium vs Budget Tyres

Economy Tyres:
Economy tyres can get you from A to B, but they often lack the advanced technology and superior materials found in premium tyres. This can result in less optimal performance, especially in challenging conditions like wet or icy roads. The grip, braking distance, and handling might not be as reliable, which could compromise safety.

Premium Tyres:
Premium tyres excel in performance and safety. They are engineered to provide excellent grip, shorter braking distances, and superior handling, regardless of weather conditions. These tyres often incorporate the latest technology, ensuring optimal performance. For instance, if you’re navigating the unpredictable weather of Halifax, a premium tyre’s advanced tread design and superior rubber compounds can make a world of difference.

Durability and Longevity- Premium vs Budget Tyres

Economy Tyres:
While cheaper upfront, economy tyres may wear out faster. The materials used and the construction quality often mean a shorter lifespan, leading to more frequent replacements. Over time, the cost of continually replacing economy tyres can add up.

Premium Tyres:
Premium tyres are built to last. Their superior construction and high-quality materials mean they can handle more miles and harsher conditions without wearing out quickly. This durability translates into fewer replacements and potentially lower costs over the long term.

Fuel Efficiency

Economy Tyres:
Economy tyres might save you money initially, but they can cost you at the pump. They often have higher rolling resistance, which means your engine has to work harder, using more fuel.

Premium Tyres:
Many premium tyres are designed with fuel efficiency in mind. Lower rolling resistance means your car uses less fuel, which is better for both your wallet and the environment. This can be a significant advantage, especially with the ever-fluctuating fuel prices.

Comfort and Noise

Economy Tyres:
Economy tyres tend to be noisier and provide a less comfortable ride. The design and materials might not absorb road noise and vibrations as well, leading to a bumpier and noisier journey.

Premium Tyres:
Premium tyres are often designed to enhance ride comfort and reduce noise. The advanced engineering and superior materials help absorb road imperfections and minimize noise, providing a smoother and quieter ride. This can make a big difference on longer journeys or daily commutes through our lovely, but sometimes rough, Halifax roads.

Environmental Impact

Economy Tyres:
The production of economy tyres might not always prioritize environmental concerns. The shorter lifespan also means more frequent disposal, contributing to waste.

Premium Tyres:
Many premium tyre brands are committed to sustainability. They invest in eco-friendly materials and production methods. The longer lifespan also means fewer tyres end up in landfills, reducing environmental impact.

Final Thoughts

Choosing between economy and premium tyres boils down to your priorities and driving habits. If you’re looking for short-term savings and don’t drive much, economy tyres might suffice. However, if you value performance, safety, durability, and comfort—and you drive frequently—investing in premium tyres is likely the better choice.

In the end, tyres are the only part of your vehicle that makes contact with the road. They play a crucial role in your safety and driving experience. So, while it might be tempting to go for the cheaper option, consider the long-term benefits and peace of mind that come with premium tyres. After all, you get what you pay for.

Whether you’re navigating the busy streets of Halifax or embarking on longer journeys, the right tyres can make all the difference. Drive safe, and choose wisely!

In fact, it is true what they say,

“they look similar,” but until you get them onto your car,. You pay your money but you do not know how they are going to perform out on the road. This is an excellent video to help inform you. it shows the difference between cheap tyres and more expensive tyres.

Watch this wet braking test

to see the difference between a set of Continental premium tyres and a set of cheaper budget tyres that look similar but perform very differently on the road. This may help you decide which ones you want to spend your money on. we all have a choice?

The budget tyre took an average

of 14 metres or 3 and 1/2 car lengths extra, to stop. When the premium tyre had come to a stop, the car on budget tyres was still travelling at 31mph.
