I dont often a single out specific cars. However in my opinion the Porsche is very special. However, I still think that the Porsche owners should think about fitting a set of winter tyres.

By doing this they will be able to drive much safer and with more confidence, should a rapid snow fall occur. What many drivers do not know is that  below 7°C the rubber compound in all summer tyres hardens, causing a drop in performance and an increase in braking distance by up to 12%.

Hence, this is the first important point to think about. Winter tyres have an added ingredient . Accordingly, in the tread and the rest of the tyre compound. This extra ingredient, is “Silica”. As a result the tyres do not harden as the temperature falls below 7 degrees.

Modern winter tyres have also many extra sipes built into them. These sipes are the tiny slits in the tread and shoulder of the tyres. These slits make a good job of removing any wet or snow from the tyres. Winter tyres are therfore, much safer than summer tyres when driving your Porsche in winter time.

Managing Director of Bridgestone Robin Shaw has recommend these simple tips to protect drivers over the Winter period. “Driving in winter conditions is something everyone must prepare for. It is not only about having the right tyres; the driver’s behaviour is also essential in these conditions as he or she needs to understand and adapt to different winter hazards.

I must admit that in my opinion all the hard work. Hence , from the tyre industry regarding winter tyres, is starting to pay off. Our winters here in the UK have become more severe and spasmodic. As a result, over the past twenty years or so.

Last year was extremely mild. For this reason, we only had a couple of frosty nights, here in Halifax, Yorkshire, UK. Other years have brought some heavy snow falls. Catching motorists out.

Therefore, a large majority of our car owners now prepare their cars for winter. Winter tyres have become very popular because of their contribution to safer driving in extreme weather  conditions. Especially, in hilly and mountainous regions of the country. Including here at the foot of the Pennine mountain range.

One of the down sides of marketing a tyre product comes when a popular tyre is replaced. Of course, I mean the general Grabber tyre range.  I still have some customers in Halifax Yorkshire, UK who drive about on the original grabbers.

Because it fits Land Rovers, then we sell many of these tyres to farmers. Because of this then the farmers are the worse people for changing their minds. Especially when they like a certain product.

In the farmers defence, they do take notice of what we say and also recommend? In the early days we were getting rave revues about the original grabber tyres. SUV owners and Land Rover owners were very impressed with the product.General Grabber AT3

The tyre did a good job in the rougher conditions of a farm and were reasonably quiet on  tarmac roads. Then as in most western markets, General decided to make a better tyre , the grabber AT2. This was all well and good. But it replaced the standard Grabber and we had to resell it. It was a case of “if its not broken dont fix it”.

The new AT2 tyre was a little more aggressive and together with new compounds, was actually a better tyre. For that reason, we sold the replacement tyre type to the same farmers and SUV owners and life went on.

Then the other saturday morning, a guy came in to order two more AT2’s . He was highly delighted with them and wanted two more. When we checked his tyre size, we soon found out that general had now moved onto the AT3 tyres.

At first the guy was not a “happy bunny” he went away sulking. Because there was only the AT3 available now in his tyre size. He said that he could get them on the internet?

Off he went, but he rang us up about an hour later. Thus , to order two for him. We are general tyre dealers and would be very surprised if we ever were beaten on price. Therefore , this job was no exception and we received the order for the tyres.

When I was younger. I used to carry out some tyre work. Hence,  involving trucks and earthmoving plant and equipment.So, one of the first things that I learned.  Was that Michelin were the best.

For this reason, I never saw a genuine faulty truck tyre. Because of the quality of the tyre build and the first class materials. Thus, that were used by Michelin in their tyre manufacturing. Of course, this also included the use of the first time truck casing for remoulding.

Therefore, when it came to making truck remoulds, then the number one make that remoulders wanted, was Michelin. As far as I am concerned, this tradition of excellence has carried on to this day.

In my opinion, this is the reason that Michelin can offer such highly rated warranties. This is in the massive American market. The excellent record that is listed below speaks for itself. I must stress though that this is an accidental damage warranty. I can only suspect that actual tyre warranties, due to faults would have been zero.

As I have stated earlier, this would be because of the expertise and quality of the Michelin tyres build.

As a result, this Australian company are already producing biofuel from old waste earthmover tyres. Therefore, this biofuel can be used to run diesel engines,that are turbocharged. Thus, reducing emissions by at least 30%.

Winter tyre tips

Tyre testing is an essential part of reporting about winter tyre products. Accordingly, these tests are carried out under very strict supervision. In the early days, winter tyres were thought to be just a gimmick. Hence, to help the motorists part with their money.

As time went by, winter tyres were becoming more acceptable. Of course, I think it was becoming recognised that tread designs and the tyre compounds were becoming more relevant. As expected, new chemicals were added to keep the tyre rubber more supple in cold weather.

The cold has always been the enemy of rubber products. Thus, making them hard and rigid. Tyres were no different. Things changed when “Silica” was added to the tread compound. Of course, with silica added, then the tyres became more flexible and therefore more responsive, in freezing cold weather.

Along with different tread design, including many new sipes added, winter tyres became the new buzz word. In the past ten years we at Pellon Tyres here in Halifax, have sen a massive rise in the popularity of winter tyres.

The increase in sales has benefited drivers who previously would not had been able to drive their cars in bad icy and snowy conditions. Most of our winter tyre sales came from word of mouth recommendations from friends and relatives.

Until recent years much of the Autocar team was skeptical about winter rubber. They were called a conspiracy designed by the car and tyre manufacturers to get us to part with our hard earned folding for something that we don’t strictly need. But then we tried some, at which point opinions on the subject changed completely.

I must admit that this comes as a surprise to me?

Here in the UK, rumour has it that Michelin were looking to buy “home tyre fitting” company, “tyres on the drive”. Hence, this would tie up the ends, after Michelin purchased the online tyre retailer, “Black Circles”. Of course, these acquisitions have thrown the UK tyre market it turmoil. For this reason, the other large tyre players are scuttling about trying to speed up their own expansion plans.

Michelin in the form of Black Circles, have also put the “cat amongst the pigeons” by drastically lowering their online tyre prices. This has caused other online tyre retailers, to bring down the prices to try and compete.

As we all know margins are low as it is. We at Pellon Tyres in Halifax, UK are still sticking to our policy of competitive online pricing. Of course, this is added to our excellent service. This combination keeps my company very busy indeed. As expected, when other local tyre retailers are struggling.

We are very close to the volatile new year period. Accordingly, this is when businesses usually make company decisions. A sort of new year resolution. This is always an exciting time in the tyre industry, as companies come out with new year strategies.

Since their acquisition of Vredestein tyre, the large Dutch tyre manufacturers. As expected, they are establishing a strong foothold here in the UK. As many of my customers already know, we are Apollo Tyres stockists for the Halifax area of Yorkshire, here in the UK.

I personally think the the tyres are of excellent quality and reliability.  Apollo also make a winter tyre. The winter tyre is also of good quality, although not as good as the Vredestein products. These series of information about “fitting the correct tyres” are part of the big picture about the drive from tyre manufacturers for better tyre safety.

I must admit, that it has been a “topsy turvy ride” when assessing the good and the bad points about the involvement of Pirelli tyres in the F1 racing scene.

pirelli have certainly given the sports writers, something to write about. In my opinion the main feature of contention, has indeed been the compound differentials.

Pirelli have changed around the compounds to try make more interesting racing. Well it certainly worked?.
