Toyo Tyres Launch a new R888R tyre

For those who have been following my blogs and articles over the years. Then they will know that I have always been a keen follower of the Toyo tyres products. Over the years I have sold thousands of Toyo tyres . Indeed we used to buy the tyres in containers, direct from Japan.


I have always tried to maintain a good relationship with a mid-range tyre company . Of course, that will give us some promotional backing as well as having a good quality product to sell us. At the moment and for the foreseeable future, Yokohama tyres are fitting the criteria that I am always looking for.
Brand consistency has always been my goal, as it is important to sell a good tyre product that the customers can rely on both in quality and supply. It is no good, if your customer has to buy a different brand of tyre every time he or she needs a replacement tyre.

At different times in my long career in tyres, Toyo tyres have filled this spot. Part of the mix of a good supplier is the price of the products and also the stability of the price. It is no good if the price fluctuates every time you need new stock and also the popular sizes should have special offers attached on a permanent basis.

This factor also gives you customer loyalty, because they know that when they come back to you then the price will be the same or very close to their last purchase.
If I did have any criticism about certain tyre suppliers it would be that they change tyre designs too much, with claims that their new tyre will give them “X” better miles, or they will be able to corner faster. Michelin and Continental tyres are the worse culprits of this, in my opinion, but as a mid-range tyre manufacturer.

I would say that Toyo tyres have also been guilty of this.

As a tyre retailer we try to offer our customers continuity and value, but this becomes difficult when they are always changing tread designs claims that this new tyre is better than their old tyre.

It can make you feel daft when every time a guy buys a new tyre, you have to sell him the latest tyre that superseded the last one he bought. One of my main grumbles was when Toyo tyres introduce a directional tyre and ran besides a normal tread pattern.

This was also done by other tyre companies along with the introduction of the asymmetric tread design, which meant that the tyre could only be fitted to one corner with the tread facing a certain way, which were marked “inside” and “outside”.
This mixture of tread designs and specific tyres for specific cars started to put me off a little, because I did not think that it was what my customers here in Halifax UK, wanted.

Like many of the mid-range tyre companies, Toyo tyres had ambitions to join the top elite tyre companies, by way of supplying the car manufacturers with the Toyo tyres product.
One of the car makers that they were successful with was Audi. Some of the Audi models were coming out on Toyo tyres as original equipment. This also meant that when the tyre needed replacing, then there would be a chance that the driver would replace the tyres with Toyo again and would give them a better market share.

This new drive lead Toyo tyres, to develop a tyre for Audi.

Toyo tyres then developed a tyre that would also become a street legal track racing tyre, the Proxes R8888. This was replaced by a new tyre, now called the Proxes R888R.

These tyres although legal to drive on the normal roads, were used in many club championships by would be car racing stars. This new tyre has also been recognised by the French car maker Renault, when Renault Sport fitted the tyre as original equipment on the new Megane R26R model.
The new tyre will be produced in 32 different sizes in the beginning. The new Proxes R888R will give the driver a fast warm up time, with increased dry grip and a sustained performance over multiple laps and heat cycles.

A rayon “super-high” turn up ply on some sizes, together with steel side plies, give the new Proxes R888R a more accurate steering response and driver feedback, increasing the drivers control and therefore optimising lap times.

Like most of the other major tyre companies, Pirelli Tyres is striving to compete in the drive to produce a greener and more fuel-efficient tyre.

The new tyre from Pirelli is the Scorpion Verde, the Verde obviously meaning “green” in English.
The new tyre is an all-season tyre” and will be aimed at the ever-growing SUV and crossover vehicle market. Because the manufacture of the compounds will include a product by the name of Highly Aromatic Oil Free, or “HAOF” for short, they will use 8% less carbon-based oil materials and therefore be safer to the environment, hence the term Verde.

and quietness to a new level, while also providing the driver with a higher mileage and reducing their driving costs.

Drivers of SUVs and crossover vehicles are not known to buy these types of cars to save money on fuel consumption but for other reasons, which may include a higher driving position, a greater sense of safety, and better vision when driving.

These are the reasons that my wife gave when buying her new Mitsubishi Outlander. What the fuel consumption of the car did made little difference to her choice.


We do, however, have a significant proportion of our customers now driving these vehicles, and when the price of fuel was sky high, they did look at things to help them with their consumption. I noticed that they were looking more and more at the information on the new tyre labelling system.

and our customers in Halifax were getting concerned about the winter. Would this type of tyre be good enough for the winter? The answer came when we had our first bad winter in many years, and these vehicles were hopeless in any type of snowy or icy condition.
This is probably one of the reasons that Pirelli SUV and Crossover Tyres used their new product as an “all-season tyre” I am not sure that an all-season tyre would be good enough in the hilly Halifax area but would be ideal for use in the flatter and milder regions of the UK.

Following in the footsteps of other large tyre companies. Then Pirelli have developed an all-season tyre that can be used on high performance vehicles. Pirelli offer the public a tyre that covers winter and summer climate changes.

I personally like this idea. Especially for drivers who live in hilly and mountainous regions of the world. For this reason then these tyres benefit the driver when changing from a nice sunny day to a torrential   downpour. Also these tyres will cover a wide range of temperatures. In common with many other all-weather tyres,

the new Pirelli tyres have a much lower noise levels say compared with similar products of yesteryear. Also this tyre could be a competitor for the Michelin CrossClimate range of tyres.

An added bonus on the Pirelli all-season tyres is the use of seal inside technology. Hence, this gives the tyres protection against nails and screws penetrating the tyre. Objects of 4 mm long can penetrate the tread without the tyre deflating. Although this tyre is not a runflat, it certainly gives some protection from picked up sharp objects in the road.

Finally the new tyre is equipped

with tread blocks that will stand up to a certain amount of snowfall. This is where I slightly disagree. Therefore I am not sure that this is as good as a traditional winter tyre such as Falken Winter tyres. My gut feeling is that if you live in a snowfall area or hilly area. Michelin tyres: Do you pay for what you get?

While I feel it is important to compare consumer brands, I think that you are normally looking at a cheap product compared to an expensive product and all the things that slot in between the various things.

It is saying why Primark clothes are cheaper than, say, Marks and Spencer clothes. There are hundreds of differentials you could look at, but at the end of the day, they are after all only clothes and you pay your money and take your choice.
It is the same for millions of other products that we buy, At the end of the day, we are not really comparing like for like; after all, a coat is a coat and a handbag is a handbag.

You can only compare like-for-like products that are the same make and the same quality. It makes sense then that a Michelin premium tyre should be of much better quality than a cheap budget brand of tyre; after all, its not rocket science.

Michelin tyres have over a century of expertise

Like all the top tyre brands, these companies have put billions of hours of time and money into research and development until we have reached the very high standard of today’s tyres.

These products have reached higher and higher standard over the years to give us high-performing car tyres that we can fit onto our cars and enjoy today.

The budget tyre companies that arrive on our shores

from places like China are in a completely different class to the top tyre companies. Please don’t get me wrong, I think that there is a call and a place for budget tyre brands;

indeed, at the moment, the cheap new tyre is out selling the premium tyre products (at least in my area of Halifax, Yorkshire, UK).
The thing that I am not sure about is when videos are made comparing these products.

I think it would be much fairer to compare the budget tyre brands against each other and the premium tyre brands against each other, say Michelin versus Goodyear or Pirelli. I think that we all know that a Michelin tyre will stop at a much shorter distance than a budget tyre?

What about the other things that should be thrown into the equation?

For example, would the results have been the same if the test had been carried out on a Ford Fiesta or a Vauxhall Corsa? I do not think so. They always seem to use a top-of-the range model, with all the mod cons, to test these tyres when it is obvious that the

Michelin tyres are going to outperform some budget brand from some far eastern country.

Another factor is the Price? It does not take much time now to compare tyre prices on the internet, and you can clearly see that Michelin tyres will cost £30 to £40 more than the same-size tyre from a budget brand.

Does this money pay for the extra 10 yards braking distance,

I don’t know? I only know that the consumer has the choice of whatever he or she is going to buy, including tyres for their car.


We can all make a choice when we buy a tyre because all the tyres now have a label system that will tell them just how good their tyre is before they buy it. If things like mileage or braking distance are important to them, they can choose to buy one of the

premium brands,

but if it is just a tyre that they need because they are restricted to a certain financial budget, then it would be a budget or mid-range tyre that they would go for.
We know that these tests are carried out in good faith, but they are really just advertisements for tyre company concerned, The tyre information is clearly shown on the tyre label before the tyre is purchased, and you pay your money and take your choice.

Michelin tyres are to be the new sponsors of the new 2015 Formula E motor racing season. The new sport is now in its second season and is growing in popularity.

The E stands for electric cars. Hence, will be the first ever electric car racing event. As a result, the FIA will be in control of
In the first season, there will be a total of ten teams.Each team will have two drivers and a total of 40 cars will be used.

The cars will race against each other.

In a straight head-to-head race. The cars will compete in cities . Including Miami in the USA, Beijing in China and London here in the UK.Thus, a total of ten cities will be used throughout the world.
These events are expected to speed up research and development. Consequently, that will go into all normal electric vehicles. Also, try to increase the interest levels. Moreover, by showing what an electric car can actually achieve,.

The E cars will be much less noisy than their F1 counterparts. So will be able to reach speeds of up to 140 mph.

Deeper and more pronounced notches than summer tyres are a distinctive feature of the tread pattern of winter tyres. This makes winter tyres more effective at providing traction on snow and ice.

Additionally, they are constructed from a material that is more pliable, which enables them to maintain a level of pliability that allows them to maintain a firm hold on the road even when temperatures are below freezing.

General Grabbers are a winner

Hear in Halifax UK, we are lucky enough to be living in a very hilly area. We are in the foot of the Pennine Mountain range that straggles the centre of the UK. We are also a farming area and the towns and cities soon turn into a rural setting, full of sheep farms in the upper regions.
I am explaining this because these guys are the main ones that buy and indeed need 4×4 vehicles to get them around, especially in winter time. We are in a good central area to be able to sell tyres to these farmers, (and repair millions of punctures?).
The farmers of Yorkshire are well known for not parting with their money, so we have to offer them value for money, as the y always want “something for nothing”.

At one time remoulds were popular for their Land Rovers, but these were in the early days of cross ply tyres, sizes like 600×16 and 750×16 on the long wheel base Land Rovers.
As the years rolled on the 4×4 vehicles became fitted with radial tyre sizes and many new makes of tyres were introduced into the country. Some came from America, where the 4×4 market was huge. Even the normal guy on the street would own a pick-up truck.

In the beginning the tyres were imported. Hence, by the bigger tyre companies. Such as Goodyear and some of their subsidiaries . Including Kelly tyres. As a result , who were famous in the States for some of their wide and large 4×4 tyres. Thus. it became a big thing to see how large a tyre you could fit on your 4×4 truck. Smaller companies started to import tyres into the UK . Hence, for the 4×4 market. Including Cooper tyres, BF Goodrich and General Tyres.
These tyres had a huge following in the USA. Consequently, were well advertised in the 4×4 magazines. That were being sold here in the UK. This also corresponded with the increase in the popularity of the 4×4 trucks. Thus, that were now appearing here in the UK. Their popularity was kick started by many farmer’s sons. Who were going off the traditional Land Rovers. So then  onto the American style pickup trucks. That were at the time being imported by Mitsubishi and Nissan.
The tyre that was racing ahead in popularity became the BF Goodrich (BFG), which was an on/off road tyre. This means that the tyre was comfortable to drive on a normal tarmac road, but as equally good when driven off road in the fields and mud and snow. BFG were the one to beat but in my opinion became too expensive.

People started to try other cheap tyre products in the 4×4 tyre range and this is where the General Grabber came into its own. General Grabber was at first an American tyre, but became one of the victims of the tyre take over war, and was bought by Continental tyres, to fit into their product range as their 4×4 tyre.

This is what gave the General Grabber more recognition and it was not long before tyre retailers such as us were selling these tyres to the 4×4 market.
The General Grabber began to outsell the BFG tyres, with their AT (all traction) range of on/off road tyres. The other good advantage they had was that they were also priced in a lower price bracket, which suited the farmers and builders that were the main users of these types of vehicles.

The General Grabber still remains very popular today with updated versions of the tread patterns.

Unfortunately Yokohama were outbid by Pirelli tyres in their quest to supply F4 cars with tyres in the 2015 season.

Tyres like anything else come with a price.Yokohama were undercut in the pricing game. Therefore, the tyre contract was awarded to Pirelli tyres.

I do not not think that this has any detriment. Hence, to the quality of Yokohama tyres. They have proved to be a great product for F4 in the past. But just a decision made on price.

In my opinion, for what it is worth. I think that it is all coming together at last for the Giant Italian tyre company. This in my eyes includes the full spectrum of products. Thus, from the regular car tyres that Pirelli supply. As a result, right up to The F1 racing tyres and all in-between.
The F1 series did not do Pirelli tyres any favours. Because, they experimented with different treads and compounds.

As in most things one product does not necessarily suit all. Racing teams were up in arms. As things did not go right in the tyre department. But as time went on Pirelli  started to straighten themselves out. I think that the race teams became more confident. After all Pirelli  are a great company and they are no fools. Anyhow, as far as making tyres is concerned.

Pirelli are expecting the 2015 race season to be run at a faster pace and will adopt a more aggressive approach. The first year in 2013 saw Pirelli tyres taking a few hits as they grappled with the different tyre compounds, that brought them some bad publicity, but 2014 brought them a much quieter year and saw them regain some ground. One of the reasons could have been something to do with the new racing rules that were introduced, taking the ball away from Pirelli  for a change.
Pirelli tyres think that the F1 tyres will be pushed harder again in 2015.

However with the start of the 2015 season, Pirelli tyres are expecting that their tyres will be once again pushed to the limits with the development of the F1 cars engines. The F1 cars are thought to be going to be pushed harder this year which will put extra pressure on the tyres once again.
Pirelli  will be keeping things much the same in 2015. With the possible exception of super soft compound tyre. Which will have a much broader heat range offering the racing teams extra chances in the correct driving conditions. This tyre is going to be used on the rear of the car and will be another short development in the progression of the F1 tyre development.

In another development.  Pirelli  have secured the contract to supply tyres to the BDRC F4 cars for the 2015 race season. This contract was previously held by the excellent Yokohama tyres of Japan. I have to say though that this is not a bad reflection on Yokohama tyres, the deal was carried out on a purely monetary basis, with a few politics thrown in.

Pothole Britain-Potholes to be tackled at last?

As a keen blogger and the owner of a tyre business and garage, I am always interested in the things that affect my work and over the years one of the big things that have concerned me has been the dreaded “pot holes”.
It is perhaps one of the things that the north south divide has plagued us with. I mean it seems to me that the north has many more potholes than the south. Even going as far back as the Beetles, the now famous lines of, “four thousand holes in Blackburn Lancashire”, comes to mind.

However I can’t help thinking that although a negative thing, this is always good for business and these pot holes have disabled many a thousand tyres and broken just as many car suspensions and springs.
However it appears that the problem has come home to our MP’s in London and it has been announced that £6 billion is to be allocated to local councils to tackle the problem and try to improve our roads. The money is to be released between 2015 and 2021. This will be additional funding and should help them carry out the work without affecting the tax payers.

In my opinion, many of the potholes that we now see in our roads . Thus, have been caused by the huge amount of resurfacing. Hence, that has gone on over the past four winters. Here in the Halifax area of Yorkshire. Many of the gritting trucks have a snow plough attachment. Connected to the front and i have noticed that the small wheels that help the heavy snow shifting blade are missing on some of the vehicles, which can cause the roads to tear and eventually break up, eventually turning into a potholes.

Other causes are when the wet starts to freeze. The damaged area then deteriorates more as the traffic runs over it. Causing the actual hole to appear. The tarmac surface breaks up down to the hardcore and a larger hole then starts to form.

This is something that many of have been saying all along? Electric cars are not green because they charge up on coal fired power stations?

Dirty Power Stations are Powering our so called “Green” Electric cars.

This is not a new idea; in fact it is one of those stories that will not go away . Because of the politicians who have set the world racing. Hence, to beat their self-set climate emissions controls targets. In my opinion what they really want is alternative energies. Other than the costly price of oil. To replace gas driven cars with electric cars.
All the leading national governments. Began to throw huge amounts of money into their universities. Thus, to help discover alternative fuels. For the reason, that are greener and more sustainable than oil. I must admit that I am impressed with the new research and development. Hence, that has come along in the past ten years. But at what cost. After all wasn’t the world supposed to be in a huge recession?

In my own field of business. Then there have been massive developments. Consequently, in battery technology. So, and even the tyre companies are making an effort to produce more fuel efficient tyres. Of course, that enable vehicles to reduce their emissions. Thus, by fitting these tyres to their products.
However, I cannot get it out of my head. Incredibly, that these electric cars that are now being produced.

Therefore, are being charged up by electricity that is produced by “dirty” electricity.
Dirty electricity. Means that the power companies are using fossil fuels. Such as “coal” and “gas” .Hence, to produce the electricity that will eventually charge up these electric cars. I think that we are all been hoodwinked. By our governments into pretending that they are going to save the world. By make it a much greener place, or even a totally greener place? But I may be pessimistic but I don’t think it will ever happen.
Coal is still a cheap form of energy. Although the UK says that we are going to use more nuclear power. We are talking years ahead. Anyway nuclear power surely cannot be classed as “green fuel”.Look what recently happened in Japan. A horrific accident, on one of their nuclear power stations.

The next problem to come along will be the problem of regulating the power companies and controlling the ever increasing growth of home solar panel units and the ability of the public to be able to control their use. At the moment we are restricted to the number of panels we can fit onto each household roof, but in my opinion we should be able to fit as many as we like and produce as much clean solar energy as we can, but sadly NO, we are restricted from pressure by the utility companies and can only produce so much power to go back into the national grid.

I feel that I am drifting a little now, but I cannot see how issue of dirty electric can be cleaned up, and one other thing? the price of oil is now tumbling on the world’s oil markets and I wonder what effects this will have on the price of developing alternative energies?

Why do I single out “Mums”. Well this is a great time for the tyre trade in general. Including our female customers is now very important. So, there has been no other time when females are bringing their cars in for new tyres and the car being serviced or repaired.

This trend is also reflected in female publications. Importantly, because of the good vibrations that I am picking up from female friendly magazines and online channels that cater for woman. Of course, that are educating their online readers. Especially with information safety afcts about tyre related topics.

Naturally, the one I have recently picked up on. Has been published by an organization known as “Mumsnet” and posted on ww.attachmentmummy.com .
This organization interviewed female readers and contributors! hence regarding about their knowledge of winter tyres and tyre matters in general. I think this is very important and so have published the questions and answers. Hence, on my blog. Of course in the same graphic style. In general the answers were what we could expect.

But I was impressed with the number of women.

Who were knowledgeable about tyres. In particular winter tyres. In fact 62% of the ladies interviewed said that they would consider buying winter tyres for their cars. So, I find this very important when considering the dreadful winter that we are now experiencing in the winter of 2020/2021. This figure falls in line with the big picture . Of the increase in winter tyre sales in the UK. Over the past five or six years and most tyre manufacturers are taking the winter tyre market very seriously. Especially, now here in the UK.
This has also been driven by a string of bad winter weather from 2010. In fact as I am writing this post. So, the forecast is for bad weather conditions for the next two weeks and we have had 5 inch of snow today alone 14/10/2021. Of course, this will strengthen the demand for the winter tyre products. Michelin winter tyres are a favourite amongst the big car owners such as the BMW’s and the Mercedes, with the rest of the market being shared by the other companies. Mums buying winter tyres is not a new thing

The trend of women becoming more advanced> Especially, in the knowledge of their cars! This is nothing new to me. I have been writing about the advancement of the female drivers for a few years now. No longer is the car the domain of the man? You only have to look in your own family circle to realise the number of female drivers and car owners that there is. One of the first things a young woman will do when she leaves school or college is to pass her driving test and buy her first car.

When I was young the girls were not interested in cars and preferred to leave the driving to the boy’s. How things have changed! Now the situation has equalized. With young women they just as likely to buy a car has a young male! So, how the tide has changed.
Due to intensive marketing,

This change in female driving has been picked up by the large tyre companies.

Of course, with their adverts now targeting female drivers. Such as this joint article, backed by Michelin. Indeed I am convinced that the tyre industry on the whole will be run by a mixture of male and female staff. naturally, as females get more and more interested in working in the car industry.
Many tyre companies now employ female staff. Including, the fact that my depot managers is a woman and does an excellent job. So, with at least 50% of our customers been female. We have the added extra benefit of Debby being able to communicate with our increasing mixed gender of customers.
